Roy Moore’s Loss Isn’t a Turning Point for the GOP on Sexual Assault

Over the past several weeks, the drama surrounding Alabama’s senatorial race occupied top headlines – most notably for the sexual misconduct allegations against Republican candidate Roy Moore.

Though Moore was favored over Democrat Doug Jones, he lost the election by a narrow margin. Unofficial results show that Jones won out by a mere 1.5 percent. While Democrats celebrated their first senator from Alabama in 25 years, many remain perplexed that Moore managed such a close race, given the extreme controversy surrounding him.

Many looked to President Donald Trump, who currently faces accusations of sexual misconduct and assault from 18 women, on top of the infamous tape in which he brags about molesting women. Is this a new low for the Republican Party?

The truth is, playing apologist for sex criminals is simply par for the course for the GOP.

Last year Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House, was sentenced to 15 months of prison. Though he admitted to repeatedly molesting children, Hastert was charged and convicted of bank fraud – a crime committed in order to pay off his victims for their silence.

Hastert was released in July, and a judge later ordered that the former speaker neither be allowed around children alone nor be permitted access to pornography.

Despite Hastert’s sordid past, his congressional peers came out in droves to defend their colleague’s character. And they sent dozens of letters pleading for leniency to the judge overseeing Hastert’s case.

The authors included major GOP figures, including Reps. John Doolittle, David Dreier, Thomas Ewing, Porter Goss and even Tom Delay. They spoke of Hastert as a good man of “strong faith” with “great integrity.”

This language is strikingly similar to that used to bolster and defend Moore. His biggest supporters consistently explained that Moore’s Christian faith — and with it, his stance on issues such as abortion – was the most compelling reason to get behind him. In fact, Moore and his supporters have refused to put the election behind them, insisting that he has a moral duty to fight the results.

This line of reasoning betrays an already transparent hypocrisy among conservatives who claim their top agenda is protecting children and families.

Perhaps it was legendary comedian George Carlin who framed this mindset best over 20 years ago:

They’re all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you’re born, you’re on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don’t want to know about you!

Given the odd affinity for “pro-life” conservatives within the Republican Party and the simultaneous disregard for the same individuals’ predatory sexual conduct, this mentality has changed little over the decades.

Perhaps the only real difference is now we, as a nation, are finally starting to speak up.

There's no such thing as too low to go for republiconz, it's a bottomless pit and we are getting dragged down with these perverts. I don't get why when it's a Dem, like Al Frankin, there's outrage and he should remove himself, but when it's a Republicon, it's just fine and we are all wrong. It's FAKE news again....well, the real fake news happens every hour of every day on apologies or retractions for their fake stories after they have been debunked. How has half the country lost their ability to think independently or use logic to combat this trend? Perfectly intelligent people have gotten sucked into the propaganda of trumpy and the rest. No, it's not 'crooked hilary' it IS corrupt trump! He's the one who put 7 CEO's from goldman sachs in, he's the one who puts people in positions that they have NO experience and begun to destroy the country by taking away our protections...

Do you people really have no idea of how far back into our cultures history the roots of this issue go? We stold the land from the natives, brought in slaves as breeding stock, sold their children, built a patriarchal capitalistic exploitative economy based on sexual abuse, torcher and murder using that as the means of controlling women AND men. Than that's just in This country. And that's just the short story. This is a mass psychic trauma wound. This may take a few decades to root it out. Here's fair warning. All men you are on notice . Don't do to any woman what you wouldn't do to your mother or grand mother. You aught to be able to figure out at least that much on your own.

Huffington Post names and discusses the cases of 19 women. And that's not counting Trump's daughter. The internet has lots of creepy pictures of him with his hands on her when she was a young teen.
