Sanders’ Staffers Are Plotting Their Next Move: The 2018 Election

It’s been a sad couple of weeks for supporters of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. Though the senator’s chances of securing the Democratic nomination are looking increasingly unlikely from a mathematical perspective, he’s awaken a progressive movement that would be silly to squander at this point.

This week, Care2′s Cody Fenwick looked at how Sanders can continue the fight even in defeat. His staffers and volunteers aren’t waiting for the senator’s lead on this one, however – they’ve already set their sights on giving Congress new, progressive faces via the 2018 midterm elections.

Accordingly, some of these staffers and volunteers have set up Brand New Congress a PAC (not to be confused with a Super PAC!) that aims to get liberals with similar visions to Sanders into office.

The founders of Brand New Congress make it clear that they are not abandoning their efforts to get Sanders into the White House. Rather, this plan is necessary regardless of how the presidential election goes.

If Bernie is elected in November, he’ll have difficulty accomplishing many of his goals with the current Congress. If Bernie is not elected, having a liberal-majority Congress in office increase his platform’s chances of success regardless of who resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In essence, Brand New Congress addresses a frequent criticism of the Sanders campaign, that one man cannot singlehandedly enact a revolution. This PAC is an opportunity for supporters to show they’re committed to building the ideology at all levels, not just the presidency.

One of Brand New Congress founders, Zack Exley, thinks Sanders supporters will be able to take the lessons they’ve learned from this surprisingly successful (even if not ultimately victorious) presidential campaign to score wins in Congress.

“We learned… that the grassroots are better qualified to run electoral campaigns than Democratic Party operatives,” said Exley. “They just need to be given the tools, the data, the offices and the structure to succeed.”

Brand New Congress’ website includes a timeline for their agenda. From now until February 2017, the group will recruit candidates and organizers. By March 2017, Brand New Congress aims to announce the 400+ candidates they’ll run for Congress in 2018.

Candidates will be people of various backgrounds who demonstrate integrity and service to their communities. They must pledge a commitment to pursuing economic and social justice, as well as prioritizing the fight against climate change. Previous political experience will not be considered a plus.

Although Sanders has not yet endorsed his supporters’ next steps, I agree with Salon’s Sean Illing that he will in due time. Sanders has already flexed his fundraising muscles on behalf of some brilliantly progressive candidates for Congress in this current cycle. Plus, he’s previously stressed that he needs the support of grassroots organizers and other politicians to make this progressive revolution a reality.

Consider the Sanders presidential campaign a test run for a larger movement. Now his voters will have the chance to prove they’re committed to this cause for the long haul. Flushing out current members of Congress (who no one likes anyway!) will be a critical step toward political reform.

Robert, when did I call anyone a Communist? And this is not about left or right as both support the Cronyism that we have.

Sanders is the one whom says he wants Socialism, he applies the label to himself. Venezuela represents the kind of Socialism that Sanders finds to be ideal.

It is theft if you forcefully take from a person and use that money for non-essential functions or redistribute to someone else. It is not the role of the government to take care of the people, that is the role of charity.

"This country will NEVER be 100% Capitalist....and you better hope it doesn't become that. When that happens........you will be a serf."
That's a contradiction Robert. You need free markets to not be a serf, to be free, the opposite of a central planned economy. Free Markets are 100% voluntary exchanges, the people control the money not some elites.

Its only considered theft if you put yourself above your country which is exactly what most Randians do. Keep talking Eric you are showing what a radical you really are. OH cut the crap with Venezuela. NO ONE including Bernie has said a damned thing about making America into Venezuela. NO one has said a damned thing about dumping capitalism. The REAL danger is you PURISTS who think it has to be ALL one way or the other. This country will NEVER be 100% Capitalist....and you better hope it doesn't become that. When that happens........you will be a serf.
NO pure monetary system is good. NONE OF THEM.

"How Can Millennials Fall For Sanders’ Socialist Paternalism?
The American Left Continues Lovemaking with Long-dead Idea of State Control "
"The intellectual folly of centralized economic planning and governmental economic interventionism presumably died with the fall of communism.

Yet, the left in the United States continues its lovemaking with the long-dead idea of state interventionism in economic affairs. El Nuevo Herald contributor Orestes Rodríguez has poignantly labeled this love affair as “ideological necrophilia.”

@Roxy yes #FeelTheBern

Stop and think do you really know what would result if Bernie achieved his version of Socialist utopia?

You can enjoy that utopia today as it is reaching it's climax in real time:

True Robert, when he says "Free" he means stealing from the middle class to pay a high cost for that "free" stuff. He would remove all barriers to rising costs in education and healthcare. It's not INVESTING when you take other people's money at gunpoint, that is THEFT!

Bernia is promising NOTHING FREE as far as the country is concerned. When he says free education he mean INVESTING in our future as a citizenry and as a country. When education gets too costly WE as a country lose huge numbers of graduates. And guess what??? Business doesn't CARE!!!! They will simply hire someone in India or any other country with a free educational system. And WE Americans will simply get screwed. EDUCATION IS our future. BUT Business would rather we NOT be educated for a number of reasons. One is of course political. If we are too smart we will see through their bullshit to easily. But More importantly......over seas labor is MUCH cheaper than ours because they didn't have OUR cost factor for ordinary citizens. Business LOVES slave labor.....and if the government hadn't stopped it here we would still have it. So they would MUCH rather outsource or import H1Bs which can be exploited MUCH easier and work for far less. Of course its not FREE and Bernie fully admits it. Its free education for the student......not for the country. The country is INVESTING in its future. But many own the right think you should DESERVE and EARN an education....which usually means the more privileged get educated and everyone else can suck it. This globalism has been VERY well orchestrated to create slave labor all over again. They were very smart.....they simply said well screw your regulations and control......we will go where we can make people do work f
