Sessions Promises to Split Up Families That Cross Border

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is upping his anti-immigrant rhetoric in an unconscionable way. In a speech to law enforcement leaders, Sessions pledged that undocumented parents who try to bring children across the U.S. border would not just be detained, but also separated from their kids. He added that this policy would be “zero tolerance.”

“If you cross this border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you,” said Sessions. “If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law. If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over our border.”

No doubt, Sessions is hoping this policy will actively deter families from attempting to enter the country in the first place since parents and children will be divided.

That doesn’t make the policy any less callous, however. Most people crossing the U.S./Mexican border these days are families fleeing from violence in Central America. These parents aren’t evil, they’re desperate to keep their kids safe. To treat asylum seekers like criminals and punish them by separating them from the people that mean the most to them is to handle an admittedly complicated situation without an ounce of empathy.

As NPR explains, in the past, border-crossing immigrants were returned to Mexico along with their children. Moving forward, though, Sessions wants to see 100 percent of these undocumented immigrants prosecuted by the Department of Homeland Security, where they can be punished by as much as six months in prison.

While their parents await their court date and serve out sentences, the children would be housed in juvenile centers – a situation that you have to imagine would be traumatic for kids who have already gone through the difficult experience of leaving their homes. None of Sessions’s policy can be considered in the best interest of the children.

Because of the Trump administration’s increased push to apprehend immigrants at the border, detention facilities and immigration courts are already overwhelmed. By making it procedure to prosecute all border crossers to the fullest extent, the system is only going to get more messy, ineffective and overcrowded.

Sessions will claim that these steps are necessary to maintain law and order, but never forget that he’s selective about when zero tolerance should apply. He seems to have forgiven himself for committing perjury during his Senate confirmation hearing when asked about meetings with Russians, yet when poor, brown people break a law, he’s prepared to throw the book at them!

Take Action

The Trump administration has compromised America’s character and morality in a lot of ways, but deliberately breaking apart families in need is a step way too far. Regardless of where you stand on immigration, we should all be able to agree that ripping away babies from their mothers just to prove some kind of point is not the policy we should adopt.

Sign this petition to make sure Sessions and the Department of Justice knows that you are NOT in favor of this idea.

The people are fleeing violence, so we meet them with more violence. The Trump Administration has no heart. It's traumatizing children and putting them in a system they don't understand. When children go to court, they're expected to represent themselves. If another country did this to American children, Trump would be sending troops and warships.

Is it child smuggling by definition? Are the parents no better than coyote smugglers and human traffickers? You are aware parents with children have a faster path for legal immigration if done legally.
