Tell Lowell Sun: Christmas Song Mocking Trans Rights is No Joke!

The Lowell Sun this week published a host of what are meant to be humorous and topical re-workings of Christmas songs. However one of the songs, to the tune of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” makes fun of Chaz Bono’s trans identity and the new law in Massachusetts that protects trans people from workplace discrimination.

The song as posted on the news site reads:

To the tune of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”:

Chaz Bono got turned into a man, dear.

Dancin’ with a woman on TV.

You might say there’s no such thing as Santa

Till you see what Chaz got ‘neath his tree.

Chastity was once a cute girl

On her parents’ TV show.

Then she stunned the whole dang nation,

When she said her girl parts had to go.

Now transgenders in the Bay State

Have a law that’s etched in black.

It says they can change their gender.

Then if they want, they can change it back.

Chaz Bono got turned into a man, dear.

Cher don’t care but Sonny, he would grieve.

Now in Mass., some guy who’s born as Adam

Can change his moniker to Christmas Eve.

This is supposed to be a joke. Well let’s see how fun and lighthearted it is to be trans in today’s America:

Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey released last year by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality showed the distressing extent of discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people.

The report found that 26 percent of transgender people have lost a job due to anti-trans bias; 50 percent reported having suffered workplace harassment; 19 percent said they have been denied housing because of their gender identity or expression; and 19 percent also said they were made homeless at some point in their lives due to anti-trans bias. Finally, nearly half of the 7,000 surveyed reported having tried to commit suicide.

You’ll forgive me for my lack of humor on this one, then.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the petition below to tell that the insensitivity of this “twist” on a Christmas song is no joke.

Actually Sonny was accepting Chaz. Cher was the one who had the problem.

Disgusting! Nothing quite so funny as ridiculing someone else.

Very adult.

Uh, huh!

yes Holly, i'm sure it's hella easy to have fun when you're the one doing the mocking and not part of the marginalised group being mocked.

Chaz was atypically sexed for his Male Gender... (Müllerian (Pre-Vaginal) half instead of Wolffian (Pre-Penis) half). So in a world that cannot stand conformance to the 'typical majority', he felt compelled to transform his Müllerian sex to a Neo-Wolffian sex (re-wolffianization to a neo-wolffian state). He never had 'girl' parts, nor did he ever change it to 'boy' parts; because sex parts are never 'gendered'. If they are, they shouldn't be. If the USA is still stuck in antiquated obsolete imprecise and scientifically inaccurate notion of 'sex-equates-to-gender'... well, the USA has got a lot of catchup to do to keep up with the rest of the enlightened (better educated) world.
