This Man Was Responsible for Disenfranchising Thousands of Black People. Now He Could Become a Federal Judge.

Republicans in the Senate have been stacking the federal courts with so many extremist judges that it can be difficult to keep up with each confirmation. However, there’s one Donald Trump nominee who is so terrible that he shouldn’t escape your attention: Thomas Farr.

In brief, Thomas Farr has made repeated attempts to disenfranchise tens of thousands of African Americans in North Carolina. Nevertheless, if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gets his way, Farr will be confirmed as a federal appeals judge on Monday 11/26.

Sign the petition: Bigoted Farr has no business on a federal bench!

Remember Jesse Helms? He was a notoriously racist five-time U.S. senator who obstructed civil rights at every turn and opposed giving Martin Luther King Jr. a holiday. Farr started his career as an aide to Helms and subsequently defended Helms in court when he sent 125,000 postcards to registered black voters warning them they could be arrested for voter fraud. Arguably, Farr had no business defending Helms since there’s evidence Farr was present at the meeting when Helms devised this vote-suppressing postcard plan.

Unfortunately, it seems like Helms rubbed off on Farr. In 2010, Farr played a prime role in planning the gerrymandered districts for North Carolina’s U.S. House, state House and state Senate contests. Over time in three separate trials, the courts rejected each of Farr’s maps for intentionally discriminating against African American voters.

A few years later, Farr crafted an assortment of new voting rules (i.e. restrictions) for the state that were clearly designed to suppress black votes. Farr defended his legislation in court, but a judge wrote that the restrictions “target African Americans with almost surgical precision,” adding, “the only clear factor linking these various ‘reforms’ is their impact on African American voters.”

Typically, judges would avoid using such definitive language in their decisions, but this judge had no problem doing so in this case with so much data and evidence to back up this accusation. Farr dismissed the court’s decision as “ludicrous.”

Somehow, none of this bigoted history is a deal breaker for McConnell who still wants to vote on Farr on Monday. If confirmed, Farr would preside over eastern North Carolina, where most of the state’s black residents live. Oh, and it’s a lifetime appointment, which would give Farr a lot of time to continue to discriminate against communities of color.

Appropriately, the NCAAP has launched a crusade to keep Farr off the bench. In a statement, the organization says, “Even among dangerous Trump nominees, Farr stands out for his decades-long crusade to disenfranchise African Americans… His nomination is a travesty; his confirmation would be heresy.”

Democratic senators including Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris have joined the NCAAP in vocally opposing Farr’s confirmation. With just days to go before the vote, they all could use support from American citizens to make sure Farr does not become an appellate judge.

Take Action

With a GOP majority in the Senate, it’s unrealistic to think that many of Trump’s extremist judge picks will get blocked. However, we should still be able to appeal to some sense of morality and block the worst of the worst. Not that it’d ever be a good time to put Farr on the bench, but following the racist voter suppression we witnessed in the south during the midterm elections, this should be too bad of a luck for even the Republicans to follow through with (we hope).

So call your senators and sign this petition urging the U.S. Senate to reject the bigoted Farr ASAP!
