This WA Legislator Is Too Extremist to Remain in Office

Every once in a while, you come across a state legislator whose views are so crazy and dangerous that they need to be removed from office. In recent months, it’s become clear that State Representative Matt Shea, a Republican lawmaker from Washington, is not fit to hold office.

Shea first made national news in November when his manifesto, “Biblical Basis for War” was leaked to the press. The document reads like the ramblings of a madman rather than a responsible policy maker. In it, he outlines a plot to make all people submit to Christianity “by force,” a plan that involves killing all men who oppose the movement.

Petition: Remove Shea from Republican caucus

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich confirmed that the manifesto was consistent with the ideology of the “Christian Identity” extremist group that advocates for white supremacy and separatism. In the past, law enforcement has kept an eye on Shea, a friend of the Bundys, for encouraging supporters to stockpile ammunition and form militias to prepare for upcoming unrest.

A few days after the document release, Shea’s super red district re-elected him anyway. However, within weeks, the Republican Party removed him as the chair of the Republican caucus, and Shea faced evidence-backed allegations that he broke campaign finance laws in order to accept money from far-right hate groups.

Now, the Guardian uncovered an online group chat conversation Shea participated in that advocated for violence against liberal organizers. When his far-right associates suggested spying on, physically attacking and even stalking their leftist counterparts, Shea offered to use his position to conduct background checks on the individuals they wanted to target.

Incidentally, the bloody leftist “communist revolution” Shea and his friends believed were imminent in their state never came to pass.

While simultaneously dismissing the Guardian as “propaganda,” one of the participants in the convo, far-right radio host Jack Robertson, acknowledged that the chat accounts were real. He also defended Rep. Shea in a way that’s probably not helpful: “If it comes time for war and it’s forced upon you, do you want a leader who is going to surround himself with warriors? I do.”

Shea called the most recent story a “misleading hit-piece,” arguing that the background checks he ran on liberal activists were done in the name of protecting his family and community. Per the chat transcripts, however, he offered to look up information on people so his associates could intimidate them at their “homes… workplaces… child’s daycare location.”

Shea further urged his critics, like Governor Jay Inslee, to instead focus on spreading Christianity and “condemn Antifa acts of terrorism,” despite the fact that most domestic terrorism is at the hands of the rightwing groups like the ones with which Shea associates.

Although the Republican Party has somewhat distanced itself from Shea, it also two months ago supported his legislation to repeal gun restrictions, which… I don’t know, maybe don’t let a guy with dangerous militia ties like Shea dictate your firearm policy?

Take Action!

Meanwhile, House Democrats are taking a more appropriate stance. “Rep. Shea has shown through his pattern of increasingly alarming behavior that he has no remorse or willingness to change,” they wrote. They’re calling on Republicans to formally kick Shea out of their caucus because of his extremist views and conduct.

If Republicans are going to claim to reject Shea’s ideology, they need to reject him as well. So far House Republican Leader J.T. Wilcox has defended Shea, though. Sign this petition encouraging him to take action to remove Shea from the caucus altogether.

ego. that seems to be the instigator of most of humanities inflictions of suffering and unnecessary pain. most spiritual instructions encourage 'humble' reflection. and, even as a little kid, I'd hear too many religious teachings that did not adhere to this basic guideline. just look at the HUGH ego sitting in the awful office now. does anyone believe there's been a single day of humble reflection in the history of our potus?
