Thousand Oaks is the Third Mass Shooting in Three Weeks

Just after 11 pm on Wednesday night, 28-year-old former Marine Ian David Long opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California. Two hundred people were inside the bar, which is popular with police and local college students and was hosting a student line-dancing night.

Although first responders arrived on the scene three minutes after the first emergency calls came in, Long used a legally owned .45 semi-automatic handgun fitted with an illegal extended magazine to kill 12 people and injure others.

Among those he killed was Ventura Sheriff’s Sergeant Ron Helus, who died in the hospital. He tried to enter the active scene and†Long shot him several times. He was a police officer for 29 years and planned to retire next year.

People escaped the bar by using chairs to break windows and crawling through to safety. Others hid inside the bar’s bathroom.

Teylor Whittler was celebrating her 21st birthday when Long started shooting.

“It was a huge panic,” she said, “everyone got up, I was trampled, I was kind of left on the floor until some guy came behind me and grabbed me and dragged me out.”

There have been so many mass shootings in the United States in recent years that some victims have experienced them twice. Thousand Oaks survivor Nicholas Champion said he and his friends also survived the shooting last year in Las Vegas when a shooter killed 58 people at a country music concert.

“We’re all a big family and unfortunately this family got hit twice,” he told CBS News.

This is the third mass shooting in the United States in the last three weeks. Or at least the third that made the news. Last week, a man with a racist and misogynistic history walked into a yoga studio and killed two people and injured five others. The week before, a man with an assault rifle opened fire in a Pittsburg synagogue, killing 11 people and wounding six others.

There have been 307 mass shootings in the U.S. so far, in the 311 days of this year. Mass shootings are so common now that they don’t all even make the news. This is not normal.

It’s not normal that you can go with your friends to a bar and some of you are shot and killed. It’s not normal to go to a yoga studio and end up dead. It is not normal that on any given weekend, you can go into your place of worship and find yourself in a massacre. It’s not normal that no matter how horrific any of those occurrences may be, they are no longer surprising.

It is certainly not normal that politicians can get so much money from a weapons organization that they don’t lift a finger when people are being shot and killed almost every day. This is corruption, and it’s getting people killed.

Take Action

This is not normal, and it’s time to tell our elected officials that we have had it.†Please sign and share this Care2 petition demanding that the incoming U.S. House of Representatives introduce gun†reform legislation.

sadly ,this is becoming the norm in america, you have to curb the use of guns! or it will never stop !In the uk one statistic stated 60 gun related deaths because we dont have a gun culture & dont carry guns, its illegal .unless strictly licensed for certain groups.
