Trump Dislikes His Job — Just Like Many Americans Do

It has only been 100 days, but Republican President Donald Trump has already confessed to something we suspected from day one : He hates being the president of the United States.

In an infuriating interview with Reuters, Trump bemoans being unable to drive, admits the job is far harder than he ever expected it would be and wistfully states that he was happier prior to being sworn into office.

“I loved my previous life. I had so many things going,” he told to Reuters in an interview prior to the close of his first 100 days in office. “This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier.”

That President Trump doesn’t like being commander-in-chief is no doubt an inevitable but frustrating turn of events for many on both sides of the aisle. Trump has stated aloud exactly what we all expected him to conclude eventually — although maybe not quite so quickly: Campaigning can be fun, but actually governing a country is hard work and not for the inexperienced.

Trump has also discovered something else a little too late — it’s not a job he can quit simply because he tried it and didn’t like it. In that respect, the president finally may have something in common with a large number of Americans who also feel trapped in their jobs. According to a 2014 survey, well over half of respondents said they were unhappy in their work — a number that had been steadily rising since the 1980′s.

“Every year since 1987, the Board has run a job satisfaction survey. Nearly three decades ago, 61.1% of workers said they liked their jobs. That number has slid over time, reaching an all-time low in 2010 following the Great Recession, when only 42.6% of workers said they were satisfied in their jobs. It has been ticking back up since then but rose only .4% since last year,” reported Forbes.  “The survey asks workers how they feel about various parts of their experience, including job security, wages, promotion policy, vacation policy, sick leave, health plan and retirement plan. On all of those measures, workers were happier in 1987 than they are now.”

Despite a recovering economy, there are still millions of Americans who feel trapped in their jobs for a variety of reasons. Some are unable to look for new work because they can’t afford housing in other parts of the country — such as the Bay Area, where making $100,000 is now considered “low-income.”

Others can’t leave because their health insurance is tied to their place of employment, and with efforts to dismantle Obamacare in full force, they fear not being able to get new coverage. Many who have hit retirement age remain at their jobs simply because they don’t have the money to retire yet  – especially with pensions and other employer-backed retirement funds all but disappearing in the last few decades.

And, of course, many Americans view their job as just a means of taking care of the multitude of responsibilities they have — keeping their kids fed and clothed, paying for school, paying off massive student loan debt and so on.

Unlike the rest of those stuck in jobs that they don’t enjoy, President Trump has far more options to deal with his unhappiness — including the financial and personal resources needed to step aside. He has turned away from bad decisions through divorces, bankruptcies and other business deals, but he may find that the presidency is one role that he can’t simply give up on and walk away. Then again, Trump also knows he has less than four years to go before he can put it all behind him.

Yes, for the first time in his life, President Donald Trump may finally understand a common reality: Many people must hold a difficult or unenjoyable job simply because they have responsibilities. Unfortunately, it is the rest of America who will now suffer for it.

Past M Your juvenile derogatory comments don't make you the adult in this conversation. It's clear that when you can't contribute to the discussion, you descend into name calling.

Clinton was never the answer to Trump. Hillary lost, not because of the Russians but because of her own behaviour and is now looking for someone to blame instead of taking responsibility for her own demise. Obama and Clinton paved the way for Trump. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans as the parties stand now have a good leader or the interests of the Country at heart. Clinton and Trump trolled one another, and now both sides of the parties are trolling each other. The bar has to be raised or the USA will continue to be taken over by trolls . The status quo is that corporations that are are causing such harm to the Planet are the ones really in power funding corrupt candidates that will do their bidding.

Rhoberta/Mary: Why call out members on their profiles when you have falsified your name. Your comments are more and more like Trump's Who would say you are out of your league other than a person like Trump. I am also challenging Past Member. Past Member: Why do you insist on making personal derogatory comments. How does that solve anything in the face of the problems that are facing the world? You are feeding into the chaos in Washington rather than being a voice of reason. That is why I appreciate Care 2. Without people that Care about making a better world things will not change.

Karen You seem to forget that Hillary only beat Bernie Sanders because the election was rigged, and the corrupt DNC and Debbie Wasserman Shultz lied about the Nevada convention, by falsely claiming Bernie Sanders supporters threw chairs. Donna Brazille passed debate questions to Hillary, the DNC and MSNBC and CNN unfairly favored Hillary from the start, Hillary was unfairly given over 400 super delegates, and many primaries were closed, which prevented Bernie Sanders supporters from being counted. Bernie Sanders had much bigger crowds than Hillary and has a 61% approval rating to Hillary's 30%. Misogynist is a phony excuse thrown out by you to demonize anyone who honestly criticizes Hillary for supporting the Iraq war, supporting natural gas fracking, supporting Monsanto, taking 13 million from our criminal healthcare industry, and refusing to support single payer universal healthcare. The WikiLeaks emails, also showed Hillary told environmentalist to get a life, had a public and private position on issues, and was cozy with Wall Street, for the 21 million they paid her. Hillary lost to the worst candidate in history, because she was hated by o many people for her corruption. Corporate democrats like you are the problem with the democratic party, because you have embraced corporatism, and Wall Street, and made it ok to be corrupt like the republicans. Why don't you go to www.justicedemocrats.com, and support getting the money out of polit

@Darlene and Brian----The word misogynist is not disingenuous when used describing you two... Who do you think you are kidding---Keeping the manure hate wagon going, even tho Hillary is not in the game anymore is a tactic Trolls use and think we are as dumb as Trump Supporters are and will eventually believe it, concentrate on her instead of the Crook in the White house, if you repeat it often enough. That tactic works on the mindless, hateful, stupid and ill informed... Stop wasting air and taking up space and go back to your Trump troll hole home. Hillary won the POPULAR vote by nearly 3million votes, unprecedented in the History of the USA----this is not made up---this is a FACT! This election was rigged, Russian managed! Putin Hated Hillary---and feared her being elected. Well, he has a comrade in the White house Now...
