Trump Has Avoided Having a Press Conference for a Full Year

Just how long has it been since President Donald Trump held a formal press conference? A full year. The last time Ė also the first and only time Ė Trump formally and independently took questions from the press pool as president, was on February 16, 2017.

Sign the petition: Donald Trump, give the press and the American people an opportunity to see you answer questions with a formal press conference.

As with most things coming out of this administration, that is straight up not normal. Barack Obama held 11 press conferences in his first year in office, while George W. Bush had five of his own. In fact, you have go back over 50 years to find another president, Lyndon Johnson, who let a whole year lapse without conducting a press conference.

On the one hand, itís hard for anyone to blame Trump for not wanting to hold press conferences since they tend to turn into a disaster for him. On the other hand, his lack of accessibility is a total slap in the face to the traditions that strengthen democracy.

For starters, transparency is at stake. The American people deserve to have a president who can face reporters and explain his positions, policies and actions, even if the questions are directed at him critically. When the president only chooses to participate in interviews with reporters who are friendliest to him, weíre not getting a full picture.

Additionally, itís important for the president to feel a sense of accountability. When he regularly sends his press secretaries out for press briefings to try to clean up the mistakes heís made, he doesnít have to face the music and defend anything himself. Perhaps if he felt that accountability more directly, heíd be more inclined to improve his behavior and policies along the way to receive less heat.

New York Magazine surmises that the administrationís hesitancy to put him in front of the press is that Trump tends to lie, and he canít handle having reporters there to immediately fact check his claims. With tweets, he can walk away from the screen without being directly challenged.

Asked about this anniversary, Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters denied that a lack of press conferences meant for an inaccessible president, pointing out that Trump informally takes a few questions after events and ďengages daily with the American people.Ē

Presumably, Walters is referring to Trumpís frequent tweeting activity, which she carefully doesnít mention by name. Polls show voters Ė even Republicans Ė donít think highly of his tweets, so thatís hardly a selling point.

Also, occasionally taking questions he doesnít find too off-putting while in the act of walking away from a podium is far from the kind of access the press and Americans deserve.

Itís no secret that Trump has intensely negative feelings for reporters, deeming them an enemy. That said, he doesnít have to like them and they donít have to like him to do their jobs. It should be Trumpís loyalty to his country and its longstanding democratic institutions that compels him to take questions from the press, though that doesnít seem to be a motivating factor for him.

Take Action

Trump is long overdue to take the podium and field the pressí questions without his aidesí assistance. For all of the rumors about his mental instability and apathy toward working, put him in front of the media to show Americans he can still handle the pressure of this job. Sign this petition if youíd like to see him do his duty and have a press conference.

As the Daily Beast points out, thereís even a hypocritical Trump tweet from the past (of course there is) condemning Hillary Clinton for avoiding a press conference:

trumptweet

The bottom line is that he knows itís wrong to hide from the press like that. Now we need to let him know that we see him hiding so he feels the pressure to face the press again at long last.

There's no question that this fraud Trump is avoiding press conferences because he is a crook and liar, and wants to avoid explaining his horrible policies, like his tax plan, that only benefits the wealthy, and will increase our debt by 1.5 trillion dollars, or his horrible plan to keep us addicted to using dirty fossil fuels, as the world is quickly shifting to cheaper clean renewable energy to fight climate change. However there is some truth to David F's claim that the corrupt corporate media MSNBC, and CNN gave Obama preferential treatment, even though Obama gave us a horrible Republican healthcare plan instead of Medicare for All like he promissed, and sold the country out to Wall Street by taking $400,000 for a speech, as a reward for not prosecuting on banker. Trump's claim that thier is fake news is correct, because corporations own our media, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. The corrupt corporate Democratic news outlets, CNN, and MSNBC are pushing this phony Russia story to deflect from the corrupt Democrats cheating Bernie Sanders out of his primary, and causing this fraud Trump to win.
