Trump Proposes Extended Presidency at Indiana Campaign Rally

It’s clear that serving as commander in chief hasn’t exactly been the experience President Trump imagined. He’s been under non-stop investigation, Congress has refused to enact much of his campaign promises, and his staff has been leaving in droves.

But there’s one political activity President Trump still adores — and that’s campaigning. The president was back in his element on May 11, as he rallied supporters in Indiana for a quintessentially Trumpian rally.

Here are some highlights from the Indiana rally.

1. His “new” campaign slogan.

According to the president, the 2020 presidential campaign is already in full swing. Item one? Unveiling his new campaign slogan.

Trump reportedly said:

“Keep America Great!” Because we are doing so well that in another two years when we start the heavy campaign, “Make America Great Again” wouldn’t work out too well. It’s going to be “Keep America Great” because that’s exactly where we are headed. But don’t tell anybody. I don’t want anybody to know. But I do like that.

But as The Atlantic points out, this is maybe the fourth or fifth time President Trump has “unveiled” the “new” slogan — each time claiming it is the first time anyone has heard it. And in each case, the press falls for it unflinchingly.

2. Attacking immigrants through Rep. Keith Ellison

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Trump campaign rally without a little xenophobia. In this case, President Trump couched his anti-immigrant rhetoric in an attack on Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison.

Minnesota Public Radio reports:

During a rally in Indiana Thursday, President Trump called out DFL Rep. Keith Ellison for wearing an anti-border T-shirt at a Minneapolis parade just days before. Ellison, deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, wore a shirt that read “Yo no creo en fronteras” at the MayDay Parade Sunday in south Minneapolis. Translated to English, the shirt says “I do not believe in borders.”

Republicans have been criticizing the shirt ever since the May Day march. That Ellison is also black and Muslim no doubt adds to the zeal of targeting him and his views.

3. Waging a war against Sen. Joe Donnelly

But the rally wasn’t just a chance to energize the president and help him reengage his supporters — especially considering the firehose of bad press coming in about his lawyer Michael Cohen, the continuing Mueller probe and the leaks from the West Wing.

The 2018 midterm season specifically set into action last week when Indiana held its primaries, and Republican Mike Braun was chosen to face off against sitting Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly. If there was any doubt that the rally was about defeating Donnelly, that was dispelled immediately as the Susan B. Anthony List cruised the attendees looking for paid canvassers to help in the effort to defeat the Democratic senator.

And President Trump added his own pleas to the mix. “We need Mike Braun in the Senate, and that’s going to happen,” Trump said, according to the Washington Post. “Now if Joe Donnelly — Sleeping Joe — [and] the Democrats get back into power, remember what I said, they will raise your taxes — he wants to raise your taxes — they will destroy your jobs, and they are going to knock the hell out of your borders.”

4. He floated the idea of …. president for life?

Complex reports:

President Donald Trump suggested he’d love an “extension for the presidency” and that the media would love it because he keeps the ratings up at a Tuesday night Indiana rally. “Unless they give me an extension for the presidency, which I don’t think the fake news media would be too happy about,” Trump said. “Wait, wait, wait, actually, they would be happy. Because when I’m not here, their ratings are going to sink.”

No, President Trump, I can virtually guarantee that most of the media would be extremely unhappy to see your presidency extend beyond the normal limits.

Rhoberta E You've said the same thing 1000 times, and people are sick of hearing it. I voted for Hillary because I had no choice after the Democrats cheated Bernie Sanders out of his primary, and caused this crook Trump to win. You're juvenile tweets are boring us to death. You need to come up with new material.

Roberta G The Democrats are a dead party. Nobody is going to vote for them after they cheated Bernie Sanders out of his primary, anointed a crook Hillary, and causing this crook Trump to be elected. Most of the Democrats like Diane Feinstein are refusing to support Medicare for all, free colleges, a $15.00 an hour minimim wage, and marijuana legalization, because they are crooks like the Republicans. Over 100 million voters stayed home because they couldn't stand Hillary. Most voters have moved on and will vote for Jill Stein, and the Green party. Maybe it's time that you admit that the Democrats have become corrupt like the Republicans, and are not the solution to the Republicans.

It shows how much he knows about the Constitution, which he swore to uphold. Amendment 22 states: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once."

The corpotate fake Democrats here like Roberta G and Rhoberta E, need to stop talking about this phony Russia garbage. Russia and Jill Stein didn't cause this crook Trump to win, it was the Democrats becomming corrupt like the Republicans, rigging the primary for Bernie Sanders to lose, and anointing a Wall Street crook Hillary, who was so corrupt, Republicans voted for her, and who caused 100 million people to stay home. It's time to take responsibility, stop scapegoating Russia, and move on.

The 2016 election is over! Yes, there are lessons to be learned, but we must move forward. Remember, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana.
