Trump’s Reaction to Brazil President’s LGBTQ+ Stance Is Disappointing

President Donald Trump has a history of liking far-right strongmen leaders.

He has developed a cozy relationship with the murderous North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom he has met twice with no tangible benefit to the United States. And he has been called a “good friend” by Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who encouraged extrajudicial killings in his country and suggested that women were at fault for violent rapes. And of course, Trump has his bizarrely warm relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he frequently trusts over the word of U.S. intelligence agencies and members of his own government.

Now, Trump has met another “friend”: Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

To be fair, Bolsonaro laid it on thick. He clearly understood that the way to Trump’s heart was through flattery, so he set out to butter up Trump. And it was during some of this flattery that Bolsonaro descended into a repulsive tirade against the LGBTQ+ community.

“May I say that Brazil and the United States stand side by side in their efforts to ensure liberties and respect to traditional family lifestyles, respect to God, our creator, against the gender ideology or the politically correct attitudes and against fake news,” Bolsonaro said at the joint press conference.

Bolsonaro singled out trans people, but also slipped in a classic dog whistle about “traditional family lifestyles,” referring to gay people. He effectively proclaimed that Brazil and the United States are united against trans people and the rest of the LGBQT+ community.

Trump’s response? He silently smirked.

When it’s his turn to speak, Trump doesn’t condemn or even clarify Bolsonaro’s bold declaration of war against the LGBQT+ community. Instead of sticking up for LGBTQ+ Americans, Trump once again accepts the flattery of a foreign leader. He’d rather be BFFs with these big, tough, wannabe dictators than stand up for his own constituents.

Bolsonaro’s comments shouldn’t have come as a surprise to Trump or anyone else. Bolsonaro has a history of repulsive and violent comments toward the LGBQT+ community. He has said he would never love his son if he were to come out as gay and that he would prefer this theoretical gay son dies in a car accident. He has encouraged violence against gay people, saying if he saw gay people kissing in the street he would “beat them up.” And he told parents to beat the gay out of their children by whipping them until they are straight.

This is the man that Trump is so seduced by. This is the man he wants to be buddy-buddy with. It’s a very sad state for American leadership on the world stage. That’s why we need to step up and demand change.

Take Action!

President Donald Trump keeps putting his personal cozy bromances with far-right strongmen before America. We need to stand up with one voice and say enough is enough! Will you sign our urgent petition demanding that Trump CONDEMN Bolsonaro and stand up for Americans?

MY original intent on THIS article was to criticize a "man" (trump) for NOT standing up and stopping the words and implicit deeds of bolsonaro geared towards the LGBTQ community.
Yours on the other hand was the same old rhetoric about who to blame for Mr. Sanders losing , and a trip down memory lane to 2016.
As for the russia scandal, he got off with that one BUT he was NOT exonerated like most of the trumpsters seem to ignore. He IS a crook and a disgrace as a "man"

It's been over two years and this phony Russia conspiracy theory has been proven to be a lie. Russia didn't cause this crook Trump to win. The Democrats did by cheating Bernie Sanders out of his primary and anointing a Wall Street crook Hillary who supported world wide natural gas fracking, Monsanto and the Iraq war. It's time to move on and support Bernie Sanders who has the best chance to beat this crook Trump in 2020.

Rhoberta E My last post is not what this article is about, but it highlights how you hypocritically criticize this crook Trump, and justifiably so, except on Russia, but then say nothing about the Democrats who still have an unfair super delegate rule, are refusing to support Medicare for all, and have taken as much or more from corporations, banks, and Wall Street as the Republicans. Both parties are corrupt. How about trying to be a little more honest and criticizing the corruption of both parties, instead of only criticizing this crook Trump.

Rhoberta E.,
Is that not the purpose of this forum? To comment on the the author and the topics presented. You seem to be taking a page from Brian's book and repeating the same old droll.

Rhoberta E.,
I do not know much about the comment or Brazilian politics, so I cannot comment intelligently on the subject. However, it does seem that you have cone full circle and are agreeing that we must instigate dialogue amongst one another, instead of refusing to talk. But then you seem to support apathy, so perhaps you are contradicting yourself.

Rhoberta E When IIhan Omar correctly criticized both corrupt parties for taking money from AIPAC and the Israel lobby, and most of the Democrats sided with the Republicans and crucified IIhan Omar, for telling the truth, that is not right. You can't only criticize this crook Trump, and ignore the corruption of the Democrats who caused him to be elected. Both parties are corrupt, and you need to be honest and criticize them both.
