Video Captures Vicious Attack on Trans Woman in Broad Daylight

The nightmare began when 23-year-old Muhlaysia Booker was involved in a minor car accident.

On April 12, Booker — a trans woman — told police she accidentally backed into a car in a Dallas apartment complex parking lot, according to the Dallas Morning News. Then, Booker said “the other driver pointed a gun at her and refused to let her leave unless she paid for the damage.” The other driver said he ran Booker off the road to stop her from leaving.

Cellphone footage (warning: graphic) tells the story of what happened next.

As a mob of people surrounded the scene, a man knocked Booker to the ground and punched her several times. The crowd did nothing to stop this, and some seemingly encouraged and joined the fight. “Police say another suspect who has been identified but not arrested repeatedly stomped on Booker’s face,” according to the Dallas Morning News. Booker also told officers people were screaming homophobic slurs.

Finally, several women helped Booker to a car and took her to a hospital. “She suffered a concussion and a fractured wrist, as well as bruising and swelling to her face,” according to the Dallas Morning News.

Her father, Peirre Booker, called the attackers “cowards.” “I felt like I wanted to personally cry, but the tears just wouldn’t come out,” he told CBS DFW. “I felt more anger to the point where I wanted to go over there and do something, knowing my character, I didn’t.”

Now, one suspect so far has been arrested.

29-year-old Edward Dominic Thomas was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. The Dallas Morning News reported that someone in the crowd actually offered Thomas $200 to attack Booker, but authorities have not yet confirmed that.

Authorities also are investigating to determine whether the incident meets the criteria for a hate crime. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings issued a statement, saying, “Those who did this do not represent how Dallasites feel about our thriving LGBTQ community. We will not stand for this kind of behavior.”

This is yet another example of what trans folk are forced to endure as they simply go about their daily lives. Not only does society police what bathroom they use and make it harder for them to find good work and housing, but there are also violent attacks like these that should make everyone sick to their stomach.

I hope every single person in that crowd who attacked Muhlaysia Booker — or who watched as it happened and did nothing — are brought to justice.
