Video Shows MTV Reality Star Killing Endangered Hammerhead Shark

During a fishing trip off the coast of Florida, one young man caught an endangered hammerhead shark with a fishing rod. Another young man on the boat raised the shark out of the water — and then shot it twice in the gills with a handgun. He laughed as the bleeding shark died.

This shocking incident was captured on a disturbing video that has gone viral, not only because it’s so unbelievably awful, but because the shooter — identified by the shirt and red “Make America Great Again” cap he was wearing — is Alex Kompothecras, a star of the new MTV reality series, “Siesta Key.” He was wearing the same cap and shirt in a photo he posted (and has since deleted) on Instagram of yet another hammerhead he’d killed.

The shark shooting is currently under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Division of Law Enforcement and the Manatee County State Attorney’s Office. Although it’s legal to shoot sharks and other marine life in federal waters, it’s prohibited in state waters. It’s not yet known where Kompthecras was when he shot the hammerhead.

This is the second shark cruelty video that’s currently under investigation by the FWC and State Attorney’s office. They’re continuing to investigate the recent video of a shark being dragged behind a speedboat.

“We have not made any decision about criminal charges because the investigation is ongoing,” Assistant State Attorney Andrew Van Sickle told the Herald-Tribune Aug. 10. “Due to the number of videos, we’re looking at not just one incident. There are newer photos submitted by the public, not just one 11-second video.”

At least something positive may come from that shark-dragging video: it could lead to tougher fishing regulations in Florida. In a letter to the FWC demanding a review of the current laws, Gov. Rick Scott wrote, “The brutality and disrespect shown to this animal is sickening and I am sure that you share my outrage over these individuals’ heinous actions.”

Speaking of those individuals and their heinous actions, in a not-so-strange coincidence, Kompothecras happens to be a good friend of Matt Wenzel, the captain of the speedboat dragging the shark. In an interview with PEOPLE, Kompothecras said he was absolutely “horrified” by that video. But he hasn’t yet owned up to the fact that he shot a hammerhead point blank and laughed about it in another horrific video.

“There are images of me and I feel horrible,” was all Kompothecras would say about it. “I am embarrassed and it won’t happen again.”

“Nothing is off limits” according to MTV’s official description of “Siesta Key,” a reality show about issues like “love, heartbreak, betrayal, class and looming adulthood” among a group of young people spending a summer in their hometown on the west coast of Florida. Siesta Key – the beach, that is, not the show — was ranked as the best in the country this year by TripAdvisor.

Interestingly, Siesta Key residents were opposed to the show, which happens to be executive produced by Kompothecras’ daddy, wealthy chiropractor and Manatee County planning section manager Gary Kompothecras, because they feared all the drinking, fighting and wild behavior would make their town look bad, just as MTV’s “Jersey Shore” did to that area of New Jersey. They were right to be concerned — although it wasn’t the drinking or fighting, but animal cruelty by a cast member that’s put an international spotlight on their town.

Even before the shark-shooting video made headlines, the news that Kompothecras was buddies with the animal abusers in the shark-dragging video resulted in death threats against him and other cast members. For this reason, MTV cancelled the premiere party that was supposed to take place in Siesta Key.

That was a start. Now MTV needs to fire Kompothecras or cancel “Siesta Key.”

Terrible, if a shark walked up to my door and threatened me, I would try to kill him, but in this case it is terrible.

Siesta Key.. the only people who are doing well there are the super rich. The businesses are full of minimum wage drug addicts from surrounding areas. They don't do customer service, they're outright nasty people like this Kompothecras criminal.
