Weekly Resistance: How to Take Action March 18-24

Welcome, gentle readers! Last week was a wild — and revealing — one in Congress. Democratic lawmakers are starting to push through an aggressive legislative agenda, and some Republicans are on board with their efforts. That bodes well if constituents can keep up the pressure!

You can find information on how to contact your officials at all levels of government here. If you haven’t had a chance yet, sign up for our newsletter, and stay up to date on the latest!

1. Fight Trump’s wall veto

Now that the House and Senate have passed a disapproval resolution overturning the attempted emergency declaration that would have allowed Donald Trump to advance his border wall, we’re facing a new Trump crisis: a veto showdown. The president has already vetoed the resolution, which is within his power. But Congress does have the ability to override the veto — if it can whip up the votes.

That means if your lawmaker supported the resolution, especially if they are Republican, you need to let them know you want them to hold their ground. If your legislator voted against it, now is the time to lean on them. Make it clear that you feel this situation sets a dangerous precedent and that if the president wants funds for his wall, it is Congress that should appropriate them.

2. Support trans troops

The Trump administration intends to start enforcing its transphobic and hateful ban on trans troops. This would purge the military of roughly 10,000 people on active duty and in the reserves, despite the fact that some have unique and expensive training and skills that they apply to their work. Plus, there’s no evidence that says allowing trans people to serve harms the military, which is why the military approved it in the first place. This is terrible for force readiness and for the people who have dedicated themselves to service.

Lawmakers have introduced bipartisan legislation to reverse the ban, which would override the president. But it needs support. Contact your lawmakers to let them know you’re behind the legislation and want to see trans troops serving openly alongside everyone else.

3. Just say no to Trump’s budget

Trump’s new budget is out, and it is, perhaps unsurprisingly, very bad. This document from the White House serves like a wish list, with the president hoping Congress will agree with his recommendations. Many Americans, however, are hoping for just the opposite. The budget would boost military spending, and it demands more money for the president’s wall — at the expense of cutting a host of social programs, including those that have been performing well for a long time. Meanwhile, the deficit is ballooning because that is what happens when you pass a massive tax cut with no way to pay for it.

Contact your legislators to let them know this budget is cruel and that cutting programs that provide substantive support to Americans may actually have hidden costs in the long term. For example, cuts to Medicaid and Medicare can contribute to expensive emergency room visits and a host of other problems caused by lack of health care access.

4. The truth will out

Last week, the House voted 420-0 to make the Mueller report public in a strong bipartisan show of force, indicating that lawmakers believe the public has a right to see this important document. Thanks to blockades on the part of the Republicans, it’s entirely possible the Senate will never actually be able to vote on this bill, but you should absolutely call your senators about it anyway to express your sentiments. Do you think members of the public should have access to Mueller’s findings? Would you support redactions when merited for national security or other compelling reasons? Tell your lawmakers what you think!

5. Start thinking about 2020 campaigns to support

Everyone’s focused on the 2020 presidential race and who is or isn’t running. So here’s a challenge for you: Familiarize yourself with state, regional and local seats that are open right now, and learn more about the people running for them. It’s not uncommon for people to run unopposed — even for important positions — simply because people don’t care enough about local politics. Don’t be that person! Engage with state and local politics because they can be critical for your community. Don’t forget that state and local governments have tremendous scope and power, and you want smart, passionate, responsive people filling those seats.

I'm stunned by corporate fake Democrats here like David C and Rhoberta E who defend the Democrats even though most of them sided with the Republicans and crucified IIhan Omar simply because she told the truth about how AIPAC and the Israel lobby has bought the Democrats as well as the Republicans. Israel illegally occupies half the West Bank, Illegally occupies Gaza, murders 189 Palestinians with sniper fire, and oppresses the Palestinian people, and yet the Democrats side with the Republicans in defending Israel. In addition most of the Democrats like Nancy Pelosi are refusing to support the Green New Deal or Medicare for all, because they are crook like the Republicans, according to opensecrets.org which shows the Democrats have taken as much or more corporate money as the Republicans. The Democrats can't win by only criticizing this crook Trump. They will have to also call out their own corruption, and allow Bernie Sanders to lead them. When the Democrats end their unfair super delegate rule which is cheating, then we can move on from 2016. Until then we cannot forget about how WikiLeaks showed that Hillary colluded with the corrupt DNC to rig the primary for Bernie Sanders to lose.

@BrianF, (a) stop wasting care2 space to whine....(b) not getting your cult-hero Bernie any votes in 2020 with you ongoing 2016 talk....and (c) although Hillary wasn't Bernie a real Bernie supporter would have voted for Hillary and seen that all their friends did, too, then pushed her to be more Bernie-like just as Bernie suggested in 2016.....so if you want to blame someone for "where we are" blame yourself, too.

I really am sick and tired of YOU telling ME a Canadian who I should "defend" or not. IF you can READ there is not one ounce of your drivel that is true. Show me where I defend Ms. Brazile !!
She was a Democratic strategist who made a mistake that she paid for with her job and reputation.
Yet you don't call out the over 9000 plus lies and half truths told daily by your POTUS. Why IS that brian? I just watched him live and in person doing just what YOU do. "He is the greatest POTUS ever", "Everyone else is wrong", "the press NEVER report anything else except things against him" "They're out to get him " and on and on.
THAT'S where you should use your one brain cell in calling out him and his flunkies.
You just keep slagging everyone disagreeing with your POV in CASE one of the millions of C2 members hasn't seen your posts or know of your infamy.

Rhoberta E You're nonsense is really getting out of hand. You defend Donna Brazil the former head of the DNC, who now works for the Republican propaganda site Fox news. In addition you defend the Democrats who sided with the Republicans and bashed Ilhan Omar because she told the truth about how AIPAC has bought most of the politicians from both parties. You need to stop defending the corruption of the Democrats as I have told you 1000 times. People are getting sick of it. Both parties are corrupt and corporate owned and the corruption of the Democrats caused this crook Trump to win.
