Why Is Georgia Eliminating So Many Polling Locations In This Black County?

People talk about voter suppression like itís a thing of the past, but people in a predominately black county in Georgia could be about to find out just how real it is in 2018. A proposal in Randolph County would eliminate seven of the nine polling locations ahead of the upcoming election.

Sign the petition: Donít let Randolph County make it nearly impossible for black voters to cast their ballots in person.

The ACLU has taken up the crusade to try to prevent this plan from taking hold. ďThere is strong evidence that this was done with intent to make it harder for African Americans,Ē said Sean Young, an attorney for ACLU Georgia. Young and his colleagues have filed requests to determine why such a drastic proposal is being considered in the first place.

Itíd be irresponsible not to notice that Randolph Countyís population is 61 percent black, about double the state average. One of the locations on the chopping block is Cuthbert Middle School, where 97 percent of the voters are black.

Blame the Supreme Court for this atrocity. A few years ago, the court decided that states with a history of discrimination would no longer need to prove that changes they make to voting procedure arenít designed to disenfranchise minority voters. In the past, Georgia would have to make a convincing case that such a move wouldnít hurt black voters, but now they donít need to justify it all.

Admittedly, Randolph County is sparsely populated compared to other areas of the state, but that doesnít make it any more appropriate to suddenly eliminate polling locations. A sizable portion of the residents live in poverty and without cars, so cutting out the nearest polling location will make casting their votes in person that much more difficult. Itís not like thereís public transit, either, so voters would have to walk as much as a few hours to get to the polls.

No real explanation for why these polling locations should be closed as been offered by the local elections board yet, but whatever costs are necessary to keep the nine locations open should be considered a fair price for democracy.

Could it be that Randolph County tends to vote for the Democratic Party, a trait not found in the vast majority of Georgian counties? Could it be that November brings a tightly contested governor race where Stacey Abrams, a black woman, could become the first non-white man to serve in the stateís highest position, so the powers that be are trying to make it more difficult for rural blacks to cast their ballot?

Voter turnout throughout the state is expected to increase this November with a close governor race and legislative seats up for grabs, so now, especially, is not the time to consolidate polling locations.

Take Action

Let the Randolph County Election Board know that itís inappropriate to close down so many polling places for black voters, and that the rest of the country is watching. Sign this petition encouraging them to reject the plan and keep the polling places available and accessible to local residents.

SAME REASON VOTING LOCATIONS WERE REDUCED, MAKING THEM NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH, DUE TO LARGE NUMBERS OF NATIVE AMERICAN VOTES THAT COULD HAVE PRODUCED UNWANTED RESULTS OF THE ELECTION. Have we learned nothing?

The GOP knows that, in a fair election, their candidates would lose. Bigly.

The GOP cannot win elections unless they cheat in every possible way they can. Here is a prime example of how they cheat. They are traitors ALL, and they ALL need to be removed from office ASAP.
