Why is the Trump Campaign Lying About the Data Firm It Paid Millions?

Between July and December 2016, the Trump campaign paid almost $6 million to Cambridge Analytica, a British data-mining firm, to help the campaign target potential voters.

On October 25, it was revealed that Alexander Nix, the CEO of Cambridge Analytica, had emailed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asking for help in accessing Hilary Clinton’s 33,000 “missing emails.”

Now, surprise, surprise! The Trump campaign team is actively denying any contact with Cambridge Analytica, even though this is clearly a lie.

Cambridge Analytica was a big part of the Trump campaign’s data-gathering effort, which was overseen by Brad Pascale and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The company was hired at the suggestion of Steve Bannon, Trump’s former White House chief strategist, who was the former vice-president of the company’s board.

In other Trump connections, Cambridge is principally owned by the billionaire Robert Mercer, who is both a Trump backer and an investor in Breitbart.

The day after the election, the company congratulated Trump and Pence on their win:

“Cambridge Analytica was instrumental in identifying supporters, persuading undecided voters, and driving turnout to the polls. The firm’s integrated Data Science, Digital Marketing, and Polling and Research teams informed key decisions on campaigning, communications, and resource allocation.

“We are thrilled that our revolutionary approach to data-driven communications played such an integral part in President-elect Donald Trump’s extraordinary win,” stated Alexander Nix, the CEO of Cambridge Analytica.

Joshua Green, a Bloomberg reporter, interviewed by Anderson Cooper on October 25, affirmed that he and a colleague were invited to the Trump headquarters in San Diego, where a team of Cambridge Analytica scientists was working, so that the company could show off the sophisticated models they had developed.

“And so in the weeks right before the election when Trump started visiting states like Michigan and Wisconsin that seemed outwardly bizarre, nobody thought he was going to win those states,” said Green. “He was there because the Cambridge models told him that’s where you can pick up voters.”

On October 25, The Daily Beast broke the story that Nix had emailed WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange, suggesting that his company could somehow help the Wikileaks editor release Hilary Clinton’s 33,000 missing emails.

According to CNN, Cambridge Analytica would transform those emails into a “searchable database for the campaign or a pro-Trump political action committee.”

Assange declined the offer.

Within hours of the publication of The Daily Beast’s report, the executive director of the Trump campaign, Michael S. Glassner, appeared to deny any connection with Cambridge Analytica.

“We as a campaign made the choice to rely on the voter data of the Republican National Committee to help elect President Donald J. Trump,” Glassner stated. “Any claims that voter data from any other source play a key role in the victory are false.”

Responding to Glassner, Green labeled this denial “almost laughably false,” and said the campaign’s statements are “wrong.” He went on to describe the Cambridge tool called the Battleground Optimizer Path to Victory that came up with the best path for Trump to garner those 270 electoral votes.

So once again, the Trump team feels compelled to lie, even though the truth is blatantly obvious and well documented.

There are so many of these lies it’s hard to keep up, but Trump’s denial of the details of his phone call to Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sergeant La David T Johnson, his proclamation that “Obamacare is dead,” and his declaration that over 50 bills have been passed since he took office are some of the most egregious.

All are demonstrably false, and just plain ridiculous.

So why does Trump, and those associated with him, continue to tell lies that can so easily be debunked?

They will say whatever they need to say to inflate their own egos and reputations, and the truth be damned. They have no integrity, no moral conscience.

Michael Glassner can spout all he wants about the Republican National Committee’s data gathering, but it’s clear that Cambridge Analytica was paid millions by Trump’s people, and that their reaching out to Assange is the closest link between the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks that we have so far.

Rachel... Great post... probably the best sarcasm I have read on this site for sure. That's right, throw it all out there and see who actually understands what you were trying to convey.

Aaron F:" Did nothing else happen in the entire world yesterday...?"
This repetitive comment is getting tedious. Did you not notice all the other articles in Causes? Why not skip this and read them? No-one is forcing you to read it.

The corrupt leader of the Democrats fires all the honest progressives who support Bernie Sanders, which means very few will vote for them, and this fraud Trump or some other Republican will win again in 2020. The Democrats are extremely corrupt, and will never let Bernie Sanders have any power, so they can continue their corruption, and make millions from Wall Street and banks.

The corrupt Democrats attacked Republican Mitt Romney in a debate with Obama in 2010, for suggesting that Russia was our enemy, and now the Democrats have flip flopped and are claiming that Russia is our enemy, and risking a nuclear war, by falsely accusing Russia of interfering in our elections, to divert attention from them cheating Bernie Sanders out of his primary, lying about the Nevada convention, anointing a crook, Hillary, which caused this fraud Trump to be elected, Donna Brazille passing debate questions to Hillary, and Debbie Wasserman Shultz scheduling the debates to favor Hillary. Now Tom Perez the corrupt Obama installed leader of the DNC, fired all the honest progressives from the party, and ensured that the Democrats will lose to this fraud Trump again in 2020, because all the Bernie Sanders supporters like me will vote for Jill Stein. The Democrats are so corrupt, Republicans voted for Hillary, because they would make more money if she was elected.

"you haven't yet reached your goal of alienating the maximum number of people from your party."

No, but they're working on it. Besides, the polls tell them they're winning.

Green stars for you!
