Your Feminist Playlist: 10 Songs to Rock Out to this Summer

When the song Same Love came out, I had many friends tell me I would love the song and I had to take a listen.

They were right. I’m obsessed with the song, not only for it’s amazing gay-affirming lyrics and message, but also for its beat and melody.

Listening to Same Love got me thinking about all the other songs I listen to that have powerful messages and make me feel good, so I compiled a go-to feminist-rah-rah-women-and-equality-girl-power playlist for you all to enjoy!

Take a look and please share in the comments any other songs you can think of that should be added to the list!

1. Same Love – Macklemore with Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert

It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion
Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that led people to walk outs and sit ins
It’s human rights for everybody, there is no difference!
Live on and be yourself

2. Girl On Fire – Alicia Keys

She got both feet on the ground
And she’s burning it down
She got her head in the clouds
And she’s not backing down

3. Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) – Kelly Clarkson

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn’t mean I’m over ’cause you’re gone

4. F**Kin’ Perfect – Pink

You’re so mean (so mean) when you talk (when you talk)
About yourself. You were wrong.
Change the voices (change the voices) in your head (in your head)
Make them like you instead.

5. Born This Way – Lady Gaga

“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”
She said, “‘Cause he made you perfect, babe”
“So hold your head up girl and you’ll go far

6. Who Says – Selena Gomez

I’m sure you got some things
You’d like to change about yourself
But when it comes to me
I wouldn’t want to be anybody else

7. Skyscraper – Demi Lovato

You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper!

8. Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way

9. Can’t Hold Us Down – Christina Aguilera

This is for my girls all around the world
Who’ve come across a man who don’t respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen, not heard
So what do we do girls?
Shout out loud!

10. You Gotta Be – Des’ree

You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

Next Page: Feminist Throw Backs

I couldn’t resist throwing in some of favorite feminist throw back songs as well. Bonus points if you can name the movie this song reminds me of!

1. You Don’t Own Me – Lesley Gore

You don’t own me, don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me, don’t tie me down ’cause I’d never stay

2. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

Oh no, not I
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive

3. I Am Woman – Helen Reddy

You can bend but never break me
‘Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul

I’ve got to show the world
All that I wanna be
And all my abilities
There’s so much more to me

5. R-E-S-P-E-C-T – Aretha Franklin

What you want
Baby, I got
What you need
Do you know I got it?
All I’m askin’
Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Hey baby (just a little bit) when you get home
(just a little bit) mister (just a little bit)
