12 Tough Guys with Adorable Animals (Photos)

The city of Baltimore, Maryland has an alarming incidence of animal abuse, often perpetrated by teens trying to show their “toughness” or “manliness.” In response to this, the city created an anti-animal-abuse campaign called Show Your Soft Side. The campaign features well-known tough guys, like baseball player Adam Jones and musician Henry Rollins, cuddling up close with their beloved pets. It aims to demonstrate, once and for all, that “real men” would never hurt an animal.

Chris Nissley, Boxer

“Chris Nissley may be all fists in the ring, but with Kobe he’s all heart.”

Qadry Ismail, Former Football Player

“You’d expect a football champion to be all growl, but when Qadry Ismail’s with these guys, he’s more apt to purr.”

Dizzy Grant, Basketball Player

“Dizzy Grant may be a sharpshooter on the court, but with Saber he’s a pushover.”

Officer Dan Waskiewicz, Baltimore Police Officer (with rescue dog Bo)

“When Officer Waz was called out to take down a dangerous dog, he did the unthinkable. He adopted him.”

(Here’s his account of how he met this “vicious dog” on a police call, assessed it as being scared instead of dangerous, gave it water, and helped transport it to a shelter. He then decided to adopt Bo, welcoming him into his canine family!)

John Rallo, Mixed Martial Arts Fighter

“To his opponents, John Rallo is a fighting machine. To Doobie, he’s a pussycat.”

Adam Jones, Baseball Player

“Adam Jones has a soft side. Her name is Missy.”

Henry Rollins, Spoken Word Artist and Musician

“Righteous anger towards animal abuse is a good thing. It’s what brought Henry Rollins together with his pal, Bear.”

Torrey Smith, Football Player

“Forget about catching Torrey Smith unless you’ve got four legs and answer to the name Prince.”

Jarret Johnson, Football Player

“Jarret Johnson may be a quarterback’s worst nightmare. But he’s Tucker’s best friend.”

Lil Black, Radio Personality

“Everything about Lil Black is big, including his soft side for Midnight.”

Matt Wieters, Baseball Player

“When he has a bat in his hands, no one dares call Matt Wieters soft. Put these guys there and it’s a different story.”

Brendon Ayanbadejo, Football Player

“Buster may be the only guy alive who enjoys being tackled by Brendon Ayanbadejo.”

Love seeing men who are good to their animals just as much as I love seeing men who love children. Always touches my heart when I see a young father with his kids. Guess that is because I never had one and never was one.

It's wonderful to see our four legged friends in the loving arms of loving and loyal people who will be good to our animals. I would have done the same thing Lyn did, but I would have grabbed a bat and break his bones in his knees.

My Dad told me that, when I was 5yo and living in Singapore, we encountered a local man beating a dog with a piece of "2x4" timber. Apparently I walked calmly over to another piece of wood, picked it up and hit the man across the back of the legs - just the once - before asking "how do you like it?" My Dad didn't have time to react and stop me ... and the guy ... he stopped beating the dog !
