I'm pretty lucky, following my grandma's path with almost no issues. (At least, about periods.) My mom suffered for several years with headaches, weight gain, and even swoons. But I mostly blame it on a bad gynecologist. Most of the symptoms can be alleviated with a good medication/diet.

One way to get some idea of what peri-menopause and menopause will be like for you is to take a look at what your periods are like. If your periods tend not to have many issues then chances are your menopause won't be as bad. But if you're like me and have PMDD it's probably going to suck.
