5 Yoga Poses for Holiday Stress Under 5 Minutes Each

Do you get stressed out during this time of year? Me. TOO. Between travel messing with my toddler’s already tenuous sleep schedule, making gifts, cooking holiday meals, and somehow getting work done in between, the holidays can be a little bit overwhelming. Sometimes it helps to just stop. Take a step back. Remember to breathe.

Of course, that’s easier said than done, right? Part of holiday stress is that feeling that there’s just not enough time to do everything that needs doing. Who has a spare hour to practice yoga or meditation? We tend to put off self care when we need it most, so you can do any of the yoga poses below in under five minutes.

If you have more time, you can practice these relaxing, reviving postures for longer or even do them all as a sequence. It’s up to you! If you do choose to do them as a sequence, I suggest starting with a relaxing breathing technique of your choice and ending with at least a few minutes in Savasana to help your body really absorb all of the good work you just did.

1. Standing Forward Bend – This is actually a technique that I learned from reading about parenting. A few experts that I read suggested that holding your toddler upside down briefly can sometimes help soothe a tantrum. Why wouldn’t the same technique work for adults? It turns out that it does!

2. Downward Facing Dog – This is sort of the same idea as a standing forward bend, but it uses some different sets of muscles. Choose whichever pose feels better to you. Or do them both!

3. Legs up the Wall – This is a relaxing, restorative posture that pretty much anyone can do. Sneak away to a quiet room and practice a little Legs Up the Wall if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You can do this for just 30 seconds or hold it for a long as you like to quiet your mind.

4. Seated Side Bend – This pose gives you a relaxing stretch along the side of your body. It’s a gentle twist that leaves you feeling rejuvenated and ready to face holiday craziness.

5. Spinal Rocking – Get your heart rate up and give your back a little massage with some simple spinal rocking.
