6 Affordable Holiday Gifts That Show You Really Care

Make a statement this festive season. Instead of just adding more stuff to the nation’s landfills, choose one of these thoughtful presents that show you care about both the recipient and our planet. Don’t forget to bundle them up in recyclable paper or fabric gift wrap.

EXTRA HOLIDAY BONUS: All of the following suggestions are very affordable … and a few are even free! Now that’s really something to celebrate!

1. The Gift of Green.

A houseplant makes a beautiful gift that, with a bit of TLC, will keep on giving for years and is especially enjoyable for an apartment dweller who has little or no outdoor garden space. Tweak this tried-and-true idea by substituting living culinary herbs like rosemary or chives for the more usual ficus and spider plants. Shh! Don’t spoil the surprise … but one special person on my list is going to receive a self-watering indoor herb planter, complete with a handy-dandy pair of mincing shears clipped to the side.

2. Wild bird protection.

Bird strikes can kill! Your favorite bird lover will be able to stop his or her feathered friends from crashing into the window glass with a set of reflective decals. Manufactured in decorative designs like hummingbirds, leaves, or prisms, these translucent window stickers are as easy to remove as they are to apply. Look for the type that are UV reflective with a dichroic filter, and tell the recipient to adhere them to the outer side of the windowpane for the most effective results.

3. Draft blocker.

Your family and friends will think of you warmly whenever they use your offering of a practical draft blocker. Is wintertime cold air coming into their house from under a window or exterior door? Choose a draft snake as the perfect solution; it will be a breeze (pun intended) for you to knit or sew yourself from bits of leftover yarn or fabric – or even to craft from a single “orphaned” sock. On the other hand, if icy winds are sneaking down the chimney, a fireplace vent cover or chimney sheep will keep things cozy.

4. Dog-safe chew treats.

No doubt about it, dogs love to chew. You might even say there are dogs who live to chew. Working their jaws is a wonderful way to relieve canine tension at stressful times like the holiday season, but some potential chews are off limits (like your brand-new slippers) and others can be downright dangerous (for example, any kind of cooked bones, which are apt to splinter, or rawhide, which may be a choking hazard.) Instead, show your affection by handing out safe treats made of super-hard rubber, such as Kongs, which can be filled with peanut butter for even more fun.

5. A naturally clean, sweet-smelling home.

Homemade goodies are traditional for the festive season, but with so many people going on gluten-free, vegan, or other specialized diets, non-food items are a more universally acceptable DIY choice. Brew up a batch of natural, non-toxic household cleanser, air freshener, or potpourri and package it prettily in recycled containers. Then dole out the love.

6. Easy energy savers.

For an environmentally conscious pal who has just about everything, here’s a suggestion that is sure to please – a simple money- and energy-saving device. For example, a power strip with a built-in timer or a programmable thermostat will automatically switch itself off at times when it is not needed, thereby reducing electricity usage, greening the recipients’ home, and cutting the cost of utility bills.
