8 Natural Remedies for Dry and Cracked Heels

Cracked heels can be embarrassing, especially when you have to remove your shoes in public. However, that shouldn’t be your biggest concern. When ignored, cracks in your heels become very deep and painful. They can make an effortless task like walking barefoot feel like torture.

But before you discover how to get rid of cracked heels, it’s important to know what causes them.

You may have cracked heels due to several reasons. Dry skin is usually the main cause. Other causes include wearing shoes with open backs, standing all day, skin conditions like eczema and having calluses.

Now, let’s see how you can get rid of cracked heels naturally.

1. Use a homemade foot scrub.

You don’t have to buy an exfoliating foot scrub. Simply mix two to three tablespoons of ground rice with one teaspoon of honey and four drops of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of olive or almond oil. You can also try this Lemon-Ginger Foot Scrub, but do not apply it to broken skin, because the lemon and ginger could sting.

Massage your heels with either scrub to remove the dead skin and reduce the severity of your pain.

I have to warn you that it’s not safe to scrub your feet when they’re dry. Soak them in soapy, lukewarm water for about ten minutes before scrubbing.

2. Drink more water.

Don’t just focus on your feet, remember that being dehydrated keeps your skin dry and worsens cracked heels. Therefore, drink at least two liters of water every day.

Carrying a water bottle everywhere you go helps increase water intake. If water isn’t your favorite, try some of these suggestions for healthy alternatives.

3. Wear the right shoes.

As I mentioned earlier, your shoes may have caused your cracked heels. Shoes that don’t fit properly or those with open backs cause cracked heels.

Choose closed shoes that fit well around your heels. Such shoes will not only prevent calluses but also reduce the chances of soreness, especially if you stand for long hours. Note that wearing socks also helps.

4. Use tea tree treatment.

You probably know that tea tree oil has amazing benefits. In fact, it can help protect your skin due to its strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties.

This DIY cracked heel cream takes advantage of tea tree oil’s healing properties. Simply apply the cream of tea tree oil on your cracked heels every night before going to bed, and then wear clean socks.

5. Improve your diet.

Did you know that nutritional deficiencies can lead to cracked heels? Make sure you get enough zinc, vitamin D, and omega 3s.

Good sources of zinc include beans, fortified cereal, nuts, oysters, and beef. Get omega 3s from vegan sources such as hemp, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and lingonberry.

6. Use baking soda.

Baking soda is an exfoliant and has anti-inflammatory properties. Simply add three tablespoons of baking soda to a bowl of lukewarm water and then soak your feet in the mixture for 15 minutes.

Remove your feet and then gently scrub your cracked heels with a pumice stone. Finally, rinse your feet with clean water. Do this two to three times a week.

7. Avoid peeling off the calluses.

You’ll naturally want to peel off your calluses, especially when you’re idle. Don’t do that. It can lead to bad infections. Instead, use the gentler exfoliation methods I’ve suggested above.

8. Wear moisturizing socks.

Even though this isn’t necessarily a natural remedy, investing in moisturizing socks can be handy. The socks will keep your heels hydrated all day. Some socks have liners that use aloe vera and vitamins that can remove the cracked heels fast.

If you don’t want to invest in moisturizing socks, try slathering on thick moisturizer before putting on your regular socks.

Most times cracked heels don’t pose major health risks, but they can be unsightly and painful, so use the natural strategies above to get rid of them.
