8 Vegetarian or Vegan Comedians

For some peculiar reason, vegetarians and vegans sometimes are perceived as lacking in mirth, and yet their eating habits reduce suffering. So here is a list of vegetarian or vegan comedians.

1. Ellen Degeneres
Both she and her wife are vegans, and they had a vegan wedding. Ellen is known for taking care of animals.

2. Steve Martin
Martin is one of the America’s celebrated comedians. He also writes and paints.

3. Weird Al Yankovich
He is reputed to have said this when asked why he became vegetarian, “Many years ago I found out something about hamburgers that really grossed me out. You may not know this, so I hope I don’t make you sick, but it turns out hamburgers are actually made out of dead cows. I am not making this up. Needless to say, as soon as I discovered that, I gave up meat entirely.” (Source: thisdishvegetarian)

4. Myq Kaplan
This young comedian is vegan. He has appeared on Last Comic Standing.

5. Dick Gregory
Mr. Gregory has been a comic and outspoken civil rights activist for years. He also has spoken about vegetarian diets and animal rights.

6. Sarah Silverman
She became a vegetarian at about the age of nine, when she saw a turkey be killed right in front of her, “The farmer, Vic, told me to look at all the turkeys and pick one out. I saw a cute one with a silly walk and cried, ‘Him!’ Before my pointing finger had even dropped to my side, Vic had grabbed the turkey by the neck and slit the animal’s throat. Blood and feathers went flying. I had sentenced that turkey to death! Up until then, I didn’t know where meat came from – and I’ve been a vegetarian ever since.” (Source: opposingviews.com)

7. Russell Brand
Brand has been a vegetarian since the age of thirteen. Russell makes lentil chili soup with Rachel Ray in the video below.

8. Jamie Kennedy
He said of switching to a meat-free diet, “You feel much more healthy. I feel clean and clear when I eat vegan. Also, would you eat your cat? So, why eat a cow? I once was at a farm and I was staring at a cow and pet it, and he was so cute.” (Source: peta2.com)

Comedians gathered for an event to help farm animals and raise awareness about meat-eating and climate change.

I consider myself a vegetarian comedian. Unrecognized, perhaps, but still one, nonetheless. /:

Way too lazy to sift through the comments, but comedian Jaime Kilstein is also vegan, as well as his wife Allison Kilkenny. And their podcast Citizen Radio is worth checking out, to boot.

Let's hope Ellen is able to use her considerable influence to get Cover Girl to stop testing on animals. Nothing easy, breezy, or beautiful about it.
