Cat Finds Owner Weeks After Being Sent To Nursing Home

Cats are renown for finding their way back home even when separated by busy roads, rivers and hundreds of miles, but what is doubly remarkable about this story of feline tenacity is that the owner moved to a new home, an assisted care facility called Bramley House, and the cat still found her!

According to Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser, a local English newspaper, a few months ago when Nancy Cowen was moved by her family to the Bramley House, she was forced to leave behind her big grey and white fluffy feline, Cleo, whom she had rescued as stray eight years earlier. Nancy’s neighbors were happy to take Cleo, but it appears the cat was definitely not okay with this plan.

Two weeks after Nancy moved into the Bramley House, a sweet kitty materialized on the doorstep. From the moment it arrived, the fluffy cat lingered and slept on the grounds and was often seen peering in the windows of the home. The soft-hearted staff assumed the cat was a stray. ”She’d been sort of hanging around, and the staff started feeding her, obviously, because she’s so cute,” says caregiver Leslie Thomas in an interview with the Dodo.

Residents of the Bramley House became curious about the kitty peering through the windows and when Nancy finally met the feline, she commented to her caretakers that the kitty bore a striking resemblance to the cat she sadly left behind:  ”Oh, she looks just like my cat, Cleo. But my Cleo had lost most of her tail.”  So Thomas checked, not expecting the cat to have a damaged tail, but was very surprised when upon examination, the cat indeed only had a partial tail. “That’s when we realized that it was Cleo,” exclaimed Thomas.

Bramley House care staff were stunned – while Nancy was simply over-the-moon. ”I think it is just amazing that Cleo found Nancy. Obviously, Cleo knew Nancy was here, but nobody knew that it was her cat. Very strange. I don’t know how Cleo found her. It still baffles me. It’s really, really weird,” caregiver Laura Costello told The Dodo. ”There’s no way she could have followed her, since it’s quite a ways from where Nancy used to live before she came here.”

The mystery on how Cleo tracked down her elderly owner remains unsolved, but the staff at the Bramley House quickly realized that the bond between Nancy and Cleo was just too strong to end, so the loyal kitty has been granted permission to stay with Nancy full-time at the house. But Cleo is not taking any chances, she now rarely leaves her beloved owner’s side – and that leaves Nancy purring just as much as it does Cleo.

“We were all absolutely delighted. We all thought it was wonderful,” reported Thomas. “There are a lot of bad stories in the world, but this is a nice one.”
