Cinnamon Lowers Blood Sugar (And Other Reasons to Add It to Everything)

Cinnamon spice is well known for being sweet and warming. It adds a tasty flavor to desserts like apple and pear crumble. Did you know it is also full of health benefits backed by scientific research? It is especially helpful for lowering blood sugar levels and increasing “good” HDL cholesterol levels.

Cinnamon is made from the inner bark of trees. There are two main types of cinnamon:

  • Ceylon cinnamon is known as real cinnamon.
  • Cassia Chinese cinnamon is the common variety that people refer to as cinnamon.

Lowers Blood Sugar Levels, Helpful as an Anti-Diabetic

This spice has a reputation for helping to lower blood sugar levels.

A number of studies have concluded that cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels in diabetics by 10–29 percent.

There is a compound in cinnamon that mimics insulin which helps glucose acceptance by the cells.

Also, there is a decrease in the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream after a meal when Ceylon cinnamon is consumed, as it slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the digestive tract, according to research.

Helps Decrease ‘Bad’ Cholesterol

In a study with type 2 diabetes patients, cinnamon was found to reduce levels of ‘bad ’cholesterol and increase ‘good’ HDL cholesterol levels at College of Pharmacy.

Full of Antioxidants

We know that antioxidants protect our body from oxidative damage, and cinnamon is full of antioxidants. In a study of 26 spices, cinnamon had the most antioxidants—even more than garlic and oregano.

In another experiment using the extracts of black pepper, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon, again cinnamon was found to have the highest antioxidant levels.

May Be Beneficial for the Brain

Ceylon cinnamon has been found to have two compounds that stop the build up of tau, a protein in the brain that accelerates Alzheimer’s disease. More research is needed.

There is lots of research on animals about cinnamon protecting against cancer and how it may fight the HIV virus. Human studies are needed to confirm this.

Please Note

Cinnamon does have natural coumarin which is also found in peppermint, celery, honey and carrots, which may cause liver damage in some sensitive people. The level of coumarins in Ceylon cinnamon is very small and unlikely to pose health risks. The level of coumarins in cassia cinnamons appears to be higher and could cause a risk to some individuals if consumed in high amounts regularly.

How to Select

You can get cinnamon in both stick and powder form. The sticks are best for longer storage but the powder is stronger in flavor. The best cinnamon has a sweet smell, which means it’s fresh.

Ceylon cinnamon and cassia Chinese cinnamon are labeled “cinnamon” and therefore hard to distinguish. Ceylon cinnamon is sweeter and you may need to shop around for it since it is less available. Also, it is best to get organic cinnamon to make sure it hasn’t been irradiated.

How to Store

Keep in a tightly sealed glass container in a dry, cool, dark place. Cinnamon sticks will be fresh for up to one year and the ground cinnamon will keep for about six months. To make them last longer, you can store them in the refrigerator. Check its freshness by giving it a whiff.
