Cop Adopts Kangaroo Joey

Last Wednesday was shaping up to just a normal day for Australian police officer, Constable Scott Mason—until a fellow Aussie walked in carrying a recently orphaned joey.

The good samaritan found the joey inside the pouch of its mother who had been hit by a car and killed along a lonely stretch of Aussie highway.

It was “very dehydrated and skinny” when it arrived Constable Mason told a reporter with PerthNow, but being an animal lover with some experience in animal husbandry, he gladly accepted the little marsupial and began nursing it back to health.

However, as a human, Constable Mason, lacked the one thing that all joeys need to feel safe and secure—a pouch. But humans are also blessed with abundant ingenuity and after only a moment’s thought, Constable Mason realized his own cotton tee-shirt shirt would do just fine. With very little nudging, the baby kangaroo is shown in the below video to make due quite nicely with this new arrangement.

Since, the tiny joey is a mere 4-months-old, it requires a bottle every three hours. Constable Mason said he is up to the task and gets his inspiration from his own wife who just had a baby!  The irony isn’t lost on him that while his wife cares for their newborn, he is doing the same thing, however for an entirely different animal species.

As the primary caretaker for the joey, which was named Cuejo (Cue is the name of the Police Station and Jo is short for “joey”), he is getting an intimate look at parenting that he was not quite expecting!

Don’t miss the darling video below which not only shows Cuejo climbing into his “shirt-pouch” but also hopping right behind the Constable as he walks around the police station.

Video unavailable, perhaps because this is a 2 year old post. The cop looks very kind, and the joey very cute. How about an update, Care2?

Ultimately, I hope this baby doesn't imprint on humans and can be released, if not into the wild, at least a sanctuary or somewhere where it can be a kangaroo.
