Costco Officially Announces It Will Not Be Selling Monsanto RoundUp This Season

While the Internet has been abuzz with claims that Costco had already dumped Monsanto’s flagship pesticide product, RoundUp, a spokesperson on behalf of the corporation only just announced on May 29 that the company is not planning to sell the product this season.

Since Feb 1, 2019, I was in touch with Costco representatives to confirm or deny the reports that the company will not be carrying Roundup. Finally, after repeated attempts over the last four months Corporate Communications on behalf of Costco Management, at Costco Wholesale Corporation stated the following: “Costco is constantly reviewing its (product) lineup, and is not planning to sell RoundUp this season.”

The timing is not surprising, given that Monsanto, now owned by Bayer AG, just lost three court cases in which the product was alleged to cause cancer. The third and latest trial resulted in a $2.055 Billion award in favor of the plaintiffs, Alva and Alberta Pilliod—a couple in their seventies, approaching 50 years of marriage. Alva suffers from a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that spread in his bones and spine, while Alberta has brain cancer linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The decision to not carry RoundUp this season (and perhaps afterward—we’ll have to wait to find out), is not one that most big box stores have followed. Stores like Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Kroger and others continue to sell the toxic pesticide despite the lawsuits and warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO) beginning in 2015 that glyphosate—the active ingredient—is a “probable carcinogen” after its exhaustive review of approximately 1000 studies.

To date, retailers who sold people the product have not been named in the lawsuits against the company, nor has the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulating the product for consumer, commercial or agricultural use. It is unclear whether any of these parties is named in the more than 11,000 new lawsuits that have been filed against Bayer AG/Monsanto since the recent court decisions against the company.

Interestingly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), banned the chemical over 30 years ago but mysteriously reversed its decision and, despite the increasing scientific evidence and legal losses continues to allow RoundUp and other glyphosate products to be sold to consumers.

While Bayer AG continues to assert “four decades of extensive science” proving RoundUp’s safety, the claim may also be in question as there is evidence that, at least some of the science, may have been forged. Unsealed documents released as part of another court case suggested that Monsanto may have faked its own safety studies, producing its own corrupt science.

While I’ve written about it before, the following possible links between Monsanto and the EPA bear repeating. According to US Right to Know, there were some significant revelations during the third cancer court case, including:

  •  ”Monsanto spent millions of dollars on covert public relations campaigns to finance ghostwritten studies and articles aimed at discrediting independent scientists whose work found dangers with Monsanto’s herbicides.
  • When the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry sought to evaluate glyphosate toxicity in 2015, Monsanto engaged the assistance of EPA officials to delay that review.
  • Monsanto enjoyed a close relationship with certain officials within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who have repeatedly backed Monsanto’s assertions about the safety of its glyphosate products.
  • The company internally had worker safety recommendations that called for wearing a full range of protective gear when applying glyphosate herbicides, but did not warn the public to do the same.”
  • As part of this trial, evidence that Monsanto hired a corporate intelligence company “to take the temperature on current regulatory attitudes for glyphosate.” The company’s report indicated that a domestic policy advisor at the White House said: “We have Monsanto’s back on pesticides regulation. We are prepared to go toe-to-toe on any disputes they may have with, for example, the EU. Monsanto need not fear any additional regulation from this administration.”

This wasn’t the only shocking news that has come out of the third trial against Monsanto: emails were released showing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials may have colluded with Monsanto to help slow the release of the dangers of the pesticide from the public, as well as feeding the company consistent updates.

It’s unclear why the EPA continues to allow the sale of RoundUp or why any retailers continue to selling it, given glyphosate’s research-based link to genetic damageAlzheimer’s disease, as well as a wide range of other health issues, including: ADHD, Alzheimer’s Disease, autism, birth defects, celiac disease, colitis, heart disease, inflammatory bowel syndrome, kidney disease, liver disease and Parkinson’s Disease. Another study released by the US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund, cites research that as little as 1 part per trillion of glyphosate can stimulate breast cancer and disrupt the body’s delicate hormonal system.

Yet another study, called The Global Glyphosate Study, found that the so-called “safe” amounts set by the EPA aren’t actually safe at all and are instead linked to microbiome imbalances and damages to DNA. A microbiome is the sum of all the microbes in the body and differs from person to person, creating a sort of microscopic “fingerprint.” While our understanding of microbiomes is still in its infancy stage, an imbalanced microbiome may be a risk factor for many possible diseases.

Perhaps it’s time to pressure the EPA to withdraw regulatory approval for glyphosate-based products? Perhaps it is also time to boycott companies that continue to sell glyphosate products? Ultimately, that’s your decision. While other retailers continue to profit from the sale of glyphosate products, I find Costco’s move to be one in the right direction.

Having said that, I’m still saddened that the product has been sold for decades to unsuspecting individuals who are now fighting cancer and spending the final moments of their lives attempting to prove the link between glyphosate and their cancers, and holding the manufacturer accountable.

I hope it is only an error in the heading. We would prefer Costco not to EVER sell Monsanto products again.
