Does Your Skin Need a Detox?

You really are what you eat. I would add that you are also what your skin eats. That’s because most of what you slather on your skin will literally be absorbed directly into your bloodstream where it can do damage or have healing benefits, depending on the nature of the product. This is why carefully selecting the skin care and body care products you use is so important.

Many brand-name and highly priced products are full of toxic ingredients that should never be put on the skin. When you slather on creams full of petroleum products (most are!), synthetic preservatives, and other toxic ingredients you could actually be doing more harm than good. So how do you know if your skin needs a detox? Here are some signs.

Signs You Might Benefit from a Skin Detox

  • Acne—Watch for my next week’s blog “The Top 10 Foods that Trigger Acne”
  • Blackheads or whiteheads
  • Blotchy or ruddy skin
  • Dry and/or flaky skin
  • Dry, scaly patches of skin
  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Psoriasis
  • Rashes

Ways to Help Your Skin Detoxify

The first step in detoxifying your skin is to get the toxins out of your skin care products.  That’s because there are more than 82,000 chemicals used in most skin care and cosmetic products. To discover the most toxic ingredients that may be lurking in your cosmetics or skin care products check out my article about the “Dirty Dozen” Toxic Ingredients in Your Skincare Products. Eliminating toxic ingredients in your personal care regime and switching to more natural options are good ways to start detoxifying your skin.

One of the best ways to eliminate toxins, particularly any heavy metals like mercury, lead, and cadmium to which you’ve been exposed, is through sweating. While not a “heavy metal,” aluminum can also be eliminated via the skin. That’s because our skin is our body’s largest detoxification organ. Giving your skin a break from product and working out to build up a sweat is a great way to help your skin in its important role of detoxifying harmful substances from the body.

Healthy skin requires plenty of water throughout the day to help it flush toxins. Our bodies are made up of approximately 80 percent water so replenishing its water needs helps prevent dehydration.

It’s also important to give your skin foods that are packed with healing nutrients like vitamins A and E, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids. Vitamins A and E are found in the following:

  • carrots
  • cantaloupe
  • fish
  • squash
  • pumpkin
  • nuts and seeds

Omega 3s are found in the following:

  • flax
  • chia
  • hemp
  • walnuts
  • sea vegetables
  • fatty fish
