Got a Headache? These 4 Essential Oils Can Help

We’ve all had a headache, and it’s never a fun experience. Headaches can be caused by any number of things, from stress, hormonal imbalance, low blood sugar, dehydration, poor nutrition, poor posture and more. They’re a real pain in the neck.

The issue is, most over the counter pain relievers that we use to provide headache relief are riddled with scary warnings and side effect. The good news is, aromatherapy can be as effective as the stuff in your medicine cabinet at providing headache relief.

How does aromatherapy actually work? Even though headaches can have any number of causes, many headache sufferers experience a greater sensitivity to smells when they have an attack, especially with migraines. This opens the door for medicinal smells, aromatherapy, to waft in and do their work. Essential oils are safe, effective and generally address the root of the headache more effectively than over the counter meds. Plus, you use such a small amount of oil for treatment, it can be surprisingly cost-effective, too.

Here are 4 of the most powerful essential oils for combating headache and/or migraine:

Peppermint has been shown in studies to be an especially powerful alleviator of tension headaches. The scent of peppermint has been found to reduce pain perception, which means it can dull the pain in your temples and make it a bit more manageable. Peppermint is also known to inhibit muscle contraction and stimulate blood flow. Since many vascular headaches involve a contraction of the sensitive arteries of the head and neck, which leads to reduced blood flow, peppermint’s properties make it a natural choice for treatment.

Shown to reduce anxiety, lavender can be especially beneficial to those with tension-induced headaches. The main components of lavender oil, linalool and linalyl acetate, are readily absorbed by the skin and act to soothe and calm the nervous system. If your headaches are caused by stress, anxiety or tension, this can provide wonderful relief. Lavender oil, as a relaxant, is a highly effective sleep aid as well.

For those suffering from sinus or tension headaches, eucalyptus oil can be a lifesaver. Eucalyptus works to open nasal passageways and reduce sinus pressure. It may also work by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, reducing pain-inducing inflammation in the head and neck.

If you suffer from stress-induced headaches regularly, using rosemary essential oil can make a huge difference. Known for its stress-reducing and anti-inflammatory properties, rosemary oil can help improve sleep during a headache attack. But, although it reduces stress, it can also increase alertness and wake up the senses. If you feel a nagging head pain and mid-afternoon sluggishness while you’re at work, rosemary may be just the ticket.

While these are not the only essential oils that can combat headache, they are the most popular and widely recommended. Other beneficial blending oil can include: basil, rose, juniper, grapefruit, spearmint and Roman chamomile.

Not into buying a dozen-plus essential oils and crafting your own blends? Not a problem. You can find excellent headache and migraine blends at 21 Drops, Rocky Mountain Oils, doTERRA, Tisserand and Edens Garden.

If you suffer from regular headaches, give aromatherapy a try. You may be surprised at how effective the results can be.
