How to Stay Grounded When The World Moves Too Fast

We live in a fast-paced world where it’s easy to become overwhelmed and feel out of sorts. Sometimes it may feel like we can’t feel our feet on the ground.

Many people have been countering this by “grounding” or “earthing.” Essentially, the theory is that our bodies are supposed to come in contact with the Earth (considered a grounding force) on a regular basis. Positive electrons in the form of free radicals can build up in our bodies and make us feel a bit spastic, so the idea is that we “ground” them on a regular basis.

According to the book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?, this concept isn’t anything new. In fact, this used to happen automatically throughout human history. We used to walk barefoot and we certainly spent a lot more time outdoors. In modern times we’re indoors a lot more and because we already have electrical energy in our bodies, the devices we use on a daily basis heightens it.

While research is just now starting to emerge in recent years, some suggest that “grounding” helps with reducing inflammation, reduces stress, helps with better sleep and improves blood pressure among many other things.

While most of us are probably not going to stop using Wi-Fi or our cell phones, we can do certain practices that help us ground our energy and help us overcome that spastic feeling.

“Earthing” Outside in Nature

The most obvious way to ground is to actually go outside and walk around barefoot. The idea is that the earth itself absorbs the excess positive electrons so we feel more grounded. This is also probably the easiest way to get started seeing as all you have to do is walk outside in your backyard for a few minutes.

Grounding Crystals

Modern science has opened the doors for us to see just how crystals can affect our bodies and how we can use them in medicine just like our ancestors did. Some crystals and minerals, such as Black Tourmaline and Hematite, have been associated with the notion of grounding for centuries.

There are several ways you can use these crystals to ground including meditating, holding them or simply having them around you. Hibiscus Moon, a former science teacher and crystal expert, suggests going outside barefoot and putting these crystals on and around your feet.

Breathing Exercises

Sometimes all we need to do is breathe and focus on pushing our extra energy into the ground through our feet. In the Pagan community, of which many practices are based on rituals people did in Pre-Christian Europe, they are regularly advised to ground in this way.

Yoga also talks about the idea of grounding a lot. Sometimes you don’t even need to do the asana poses, you just need to do certain breathing exercises that help you ground. All you really have to do is sit in Sukhasana (easy pose) and breathe.

Perhaps the only way to find out if this grounding thing works is to actually go try it for yourself. After all, what do you really have to lose?

Putting your hands in the dirt gardening, walking on grass on a beautiful day or watching a storm come in while you feel the wind are simple and easy ways rejuvenate your spirt, mind and body. Whatever outdoor activity you enjoy, do it. More of it. You and the world will 've better for it.
