Not Into Holiday Giving? Try These Alternatives Instead

Gift giving during Christmastime has become such a tradition, it’s hard to imagine the holidays without it. It’s a routine, unconscious expectation of the season (or, let’s be honest, retailers) that many are eager to get rid of. And the reasons to do so are plentiful!

Our gift-giving habits are expensive. Half the time they aren’t even rewarding! Besides, racking your brain for gift ideas in the weeks leading up to the holidays, year after year, can get tiresome.

Think you’re ready to be done with the gift-giving rigmarole? Why not propose one of these creative alternatives instead?

Just, be done.

Get on the phone. Talk to your family. And explain that this is something you’ve wanted to do for a while. Let them know that you would no longer like to receive gifts during the holidays, and that you do not plan to continue giving them. It might be a hard conversation, but once you muster up the courage to have it, you’ll be glad you did.

Give to charity instead.

Giving to charity in honor of an entire family or specific family member can be a huge breath of fresh air. It just feels…right! Plus, it’s really refreshing to be able to sit down at the computer and donate, rather than running from store to store fighting other shoppers for parking.

Share your time.

Gifts of quality time (if you really want to call them gifts) are a lovely way to show the people in your life that you care, without shelling it out. Consider donating lessons in something you have expertise in — maybe watercolors or acoustic guitar — or host a relaxed dinner in your home.

Have you set aside the tradition of holiday gift-giving, either for a short period or indefinitely? What was that decision like for you? Are you glad you did it? Let us know in the comments!
