Some of these costs are quite skewed and of course depend upon where you live. You can get a dog from a shelter for a lot less, with many veterinarians offering to spay or neuter for a reduced cost. You also don't have to start out with all brand new gear either. I agree of course that someone looking to get an animal needs to be realistic about the cost, just as if you were planning to have a child; otherwise, the poor thing can end up in a shelter or worse unless they find someone who can take it on. Thinking it through is always wise!
