Today, we have all sorts of tools and information readily available to make small-animal ownership much more successful. Rabbits and ferrets can be litter box trained; we can purchase habitats, rather than just cages, for our hamsters and reptiles.

"They are living creatures who are completely dependent on you for their survival. Make sure you educate yourself on all their needs, costs and lifespan before you bring one home. If you are getting an animal for a child, include him or her in the education process and establish a daily care routine that they must participate in."

The above is so very true. A copy of it should be pasted above every little cage in every single pet shop who sell these dependent little creatures. All too often they're seen as the ideal gift for a child as people feel they'd be much easier to look after than a cat or a dog. It's disgraceful to feel that way about individual little creatures.
