Maybe a venomous spider or scorpion may have arrested his escape! Was this thief a student prankster on a treasure hunt possibly? I've heard of some pretty bizarre behaviour in those circumstances but the playing to the camera seems a bit over the top if it was done to order even by a drug addict. Surely if it was to support a habit they might want to do this sort of thing frequently and getting caught would not be something they would want so why be so obvious? If they did want to get caught why make a getaway in a vehicle with temporary tags?
