Another Florida panther has been killed by a car, the 10th known panther killed by a car so far in 2010. At least 3 more panthers have died from other causes, and as there are estimated to be just 110 Florida panthers alive today these deaths are

this is very sad as... "Only 80 to 100 panthers still remain in Florida, making this one of the most rare and endangered mammals in the world. "

Maybe some lights down those roads will help the panther stay out of the road and will help the vehicles notice them earlier so that they can slow down and make sure these accidents don't happen (as often). So sad to see, I'm sure he/she is missed by her family.

Wednesday June 30, 2010, 12:41 pm

There is something not correct here! Panthers are smart enough and fast enough to avoid cars and would be scared off by the noise and lights of a car! It is not normal behavior of panthers to be on or near a roadway. They can see very well at night.
Are there more panthers than we think?
Are the panthers eating road kill?

Being a Floridian, I can attest to an inordinate number of bad drivers in this state. Many of them appear to be surgically attached to their cell phones.
Being a cat lover, It always saddens me when these beautiful creatures die prematurely.

In my area, a Mountain Lion was killed just for trespassing on a ranchers property. The Cat hadn't harmed anything. It hurts to see the wild things killed in our mad rush to suburbanize the entire country.

Back in March, we saw a Bobcat hit-by-car and dead on the road about 20 miles from our house. I called the FWC and they'd came and gotten it by the time we got back from Lake Okeechobee that day. It was really to see, and the cat was HUGE, too, not the little small ones we've seen in the area. Such a tragic shame. I cannot image how anyone *failed* to see an animal THAT big trying to cross the road. Where the hell are people looking when they drive vehicles, into the sky?!

Doris asked "Isn't there something someone somewhere can do?" there sure is. Slow down and pay attention. I can't tell you how many times I've almost gotten rear ended stopping for deer to cross because people just think they should move for us. This is so sad and I hope the Highway patrol will start to crack down more on speeders.

I live in Fl and there is something that can be done and needs to be done. Build the animal crossovers they talk about it and we have some but we need more so these poor animals can live and go across the road without being murdered please goverment lets build these crossovers while we have some animals left in FL and stop building lets leave some forest and animals please. Also driver slow down and pay attention!!!!!!!!!!

Have they put up any panther crossing signs like they do for deer? And lower the speed limit in that particular area. If not they are not trying hard enough to help the panthers. Very sad indeed!

Something has to be done or they will all be gone. God Bless the soul of all animals - present, past and future. Life would be loney without animals in the world.
