Dear Sir

Every day in slaughterhouses across Canada, chickens and turkeys are being killed inhumanely and illegally. In October, representatives from CETFA were invited to tour a poultry slaughterhouse in The Netherlands that had converted from the electrified bath method of stunning poultry to controlled atmosphere killing.

Earlier this year, the Dutch government banned the use of electrified stun baths on the grounds that they are inhumane and do not ensure consistent stunning of poultry, which (as in Canada) is required by federal slaughter regulations.

According to the Dutch slaughterhouse manager:

"There is a natural tension between animal welfare and meat quality when it comes to stunning poultry as good meat quality (without blood spots and bruising) is only ensured when the voltage is low - too low to ensure a proper stunning".

The electrified stun bath is the most commonly used method of stunning poultry in Canada. However, Canada has the same federal slaughter regulations as The Netherlands, yet our government has made no indication that it will ban the use of electrified stun baths for poultry slaughter.

By converting to Controlled-Atmosphere Killing using inert gases such as argon or nitrogen, the birds no longer need to be hung by their feet. It's much more humane and the birds are killed instantly.

Please ensure current slaughter regulations covering poultry are applied and enforced as they are intended to be; and ban the use of electrified stun baths in poultry slaughter.

Regards

They feel as much pain as we do,they deserve to be killed humanely.Better yet, they shouldn't be killed at all.We have NO right to take another's life to satisy our need for food

If we as humans are to continue to grow and evolve into true, caring, meaningful societies we must first recognize that we are not the only sentient beings on this planet. So what does the word HUMANE actually mean to HUMANS?
Sincerely, Jamie Leakey

Noted and email sent. Thanks, Cher. Sometimes I wonder if a company or government hires and pays a person to come up with the most cruel and pain inflicting way possible to kill an animal. There are humane and less costly ways to end a life, but why do they always choose the torture method???
