A Siberian tiger carried out the gruesome 1997 slaughter in the remote Primorye region of Russia's Far East, sparking a grim investigation that John Vaillant chronicles in "The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival."

This is gruesome. The book seems to try to explain the horrors of poaching, desperation and poverty, taking payoffs from gang/mafia members and the persistence of a tiger that is seeking revenge. I don't know what readers will think of the book, but it does not paint the tiger in a very flattering light when you consider the savagery with which he killed his victim.
