The BC government needs to immediately cease all logging in critical habitat that’s mapped in the federal recovery strategy for southern mountain caribou.
This moratorium on logging must be combined with permanent habitat protection and restoration that’s mandatory - not voluntary.
Governments must take immediate action to repair the extensive damage to caribou habitat that has already taken place, including closing and reforesting the hundreds of kilometres of logging roads that currently fragment caribou habitat.
The governments must stop using caribou conservation as an excuse for the wolf kill. Predator control does not address the underlying issues of habitat loss for caribou.
One of the goals of the agreement is to protect high elevation habitat for caribou, yet a major portion of their lives is spent in low elevation habitat. This low elevation habitat must also be prioritized as it’s crucial for the survival of caribou, which rely on lichen growing from large old trees that are not found higher up after a high snowpack year.
Climate change will have a significant impact on southern mountain caribou and the need for range expansion adjustments must be considered as an integral part of this plan, not an afterthought.
