Climate change threatens the survival of polar bears. Earth heating causes the ice around the North Pole to melt. The habitat and especially the hunting grounds of polar bears are literally lost. The big hunters can only hunt for seals on the ice. The shorter the ice periods at the Arctic Circle, the less fat reserves they can use to survive the ever-growing ice-free times. They become weaker and starve in the worst case.

And it is not just polar bears in the Arctic that are threatened by global warming, but ecosystems and their inhabitants around the world - and thus the livelihood for us humans. Not just sometime in the future, but today. With each passing day, it becomes harder and more expensive to limit the earth heating to well below 2 degrees.

The German government must act immediately and decisively so that Germany reaches its climate goals. For this, the Union and SPD must now decide on the coalition exit and an effective climate protection law.

Not only the polar bear is in danger - two examples:

Global warming is already causing problems for the Green Sea Turtle today. In warmer sand more female turtle babies hatch, in turtles the sex of the young animals is determined by the temperature. Therefore, even a slight increase in temperature can have dramatic effects on the survival of the sea turtle.

Homes and food sources of the Sumatran orangutan are threatened by global warming. The annual rainfall will increase significantly by 2025 due to climate change. The risk of flooding and landslides is increasing. Thus, the habitat of the Sumatran orangutan is in danger.

Achieve climate protection target through Germany's coalition exit

The good news: If Germany is to embark on the coalition exit, we can still reach our climate protection target for 2020 and contribute to the fact that global warming will be well below 2 degrees.

Germany's coal-fired power plants account for 352 million tonnes of CO2 per year for the majority of German electricity sector emissions - more than a third of total German greenhouse gas emissions. Germany is committed to the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to limit global temperature increases to well below 2 degrees Celsius. The accelerated phase-out of coal-fired power generation is central to this by the end of 2035 at the latest.

Petition letter.....

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the German Federal Government,

reduce the emissions of climate gases in Germany quickly and permanently After a nine-year shutdown, we need a package of emergency measures to focus on decommissioning the dirtiest coal-fired power plants. And we need a roadmap on how Germany can make its contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement and limit its greenhouse gas emissions from 2015 to a total of 10 billion tonnes of CO2. We call for a climate protection law that makes these goals legally binding and creates planning and investment security for implementation - with transparent success monitoring and effective follow-up.

Now decide on immediate action!

The federal government must now shut down the oldest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants, introduce a minimum price for CO2 of 25 euros per tonne in the electricity sector with neighboring European countries and make the structural change in the affected regions socially acceptable.

In addition to the coal exit, we demand a package of emergency measures to achieve the German 40% climate protection target:

Renewable energy and electricity grids expand much faster than before and in a nature-friendly way!

Energetically refurbish buildings finally promote!

One million old oil heaters out of the cellars!

Promote modernization of district heating!

One million electric cars on the road!

Introduce uniform speed limit!

Expand truck toll!

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture!

The Federal Government must continue to promote international climate policy and promote the implementation of the Paris climate targets. We call for an increase in EU and global climate goals, including through fair, reliable and adequate international climate finance.

Best regards
