The city of Owensboro, Kentucky, has reportedly contracted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to kill muskrats at several different locations, despite having been informed of the futility of such an endeavor. Killing or otherwise removing muskrats never permanently reduces the species’ numbers in the area, because survivors simply breed at accelerated rates and newcomers inevitably arrive to take advantage of the still-available resources. And Conibear traps (the devices typically used) cause immense suffering, as victims are slowly crushed to death or drowned—which, for this species, can take more than 15 agonizing minutes. These medieval-type contraptions are also wholly indiscriminate, posing a risk to “nontarget” victims, including protected wildlife and even companion animals. Your help is urgently needed!

Please urge Owensboro city officials to opt for humane and effective long-term solutions rather than continuing an expensive, pointless killing cycle. Just copy and paste the following e-mail addresses into the “To” field of your e-mail message, and be sure to mention whether you’re a resident of Owensboro in your correspondence:

mayor@owensboro.org; glennrj@owensboro.org; smith-wrightpl@owensboro.org; conderjl@owensboro.org; velottarj@owensboro.org; pagannw@owensboro.org

Please also call the Owensboro mayor’s office at 270-687-8561 to voice your concerns. Then, forward this alert to everyone you know.
