These Parents Couldn't Pay for School Lunches So the School Sent Debt Collectors ! ! !

The school needs money, but sicking debt collectors after parents who are already struggling is no way to handle this situation.

Working in an urban school system with a high percentage of kids living in poverty, I find this story very confusing. For one thing, anyone who legitimately cannot afford their child's lunches gets either free or reduced lunch - this is a federal ruling. All the parent has to do is fill out a one-page form, and we are forbidden to even question anything on the form even if the person claims they have a family of 7 surviving on $10/week. So if these parents are in genuine need, why did they not fill out the form? That's all they'd need to do and it would be a non-issue. So I have to wonder if perhaps these are parents perfectly able to pay, and they are simply neglectful about doing so. In today's world, most people jump to the conclusion that if someone isn't paying, it's because they can't; but that's sadly not always the case.

Joanna, you make good points. The story needs additional details to truly understand what is going on. I signed it in the hopes that the issue will be thoroughly looked at.

Joanna, regardless of the parents ability to pay, the school district is spending taxpayer money for very little return on that money. As a taxpayer you should be offended.

How stupid is this school district? Is this what's being taught to their children? Certainly not empathy or compassion. These adults at the school should be embarrassed at the plan they came up with to get the money owed to them. Can't they think outside the box? Are they edicaturers or just playing Mr. Scrooge during this holiday season?. There MUST be a better way to help this family so they can pay this debt. Helping the family is the humane thing to do, not shame them.. Petition Signed

Something's amiss. In Michigan, we have school tax as as part of property tax bill. Those funds go to the school district for lunch programs, etc. The district also provides a breakfast during the summer for those in need. Why didn't they look for a more widespread solution such as getting the entire district together to reap ideas: rummage sale; bake sale; talent show? Bring the community together... sending
collection agencies out is inappropriate, demeaning and embarrassing. Oh my, how is the school going handled it ehen the children start getting teased ridiculed or bullied because their parents got a letter 're payment? At the local level, everyone's private business becomes public.
