Thing is cher what happens when someone encraoches onto my property to steal or do us harm and my dogs defend me and their home...what happens then....are they deemed vicious dogs and then put to sleep for protecting all that they know and love??? I know this is diffent than one running loose but I have heard stories about pets protecting property and then deemed vicious that I dont think is fair at all...

Stephanie, I agree completely! Dogs protecting 'home and property' are not the same and those owners should not be placed in the same class as irresponsible dog owners. I would hope that if I were ever threatened that my dogs would be protective of me and the law would see this as exactly what it is.

IF YOU OWN A CAR IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN THEY ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY,IF YOU OWM A HOME IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. AS WE BECOME ADULTS, IT IS NECCESSARY FOR US TO BE AWARE THAT ALL ARE ACTIONS CARRY RESPONIBILLITIES NO MATTER WHAT IT IS THIS GOES WITH ANIMALS AS WELL. WE MAKE THE CHOICE , WE MAKE THE DECISIONS, IT IS OUR OBLIGATION TO CARRY ON ALL RESPONSIBILITIES OF ADULT HOOD AS WE ENTER THAT FAZE. NO IF'S ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT ANY OF IT.IT IS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU LEARN IN LIFE, PEOPLE MAKE THE CHOICES STARTING FROM WHEN WE ARE BORN. WE CRY IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW WHEN TO AND WHEN NOT TO CRY. ANIMALS ARN'T TOUGHT THIS THAT IS WHY WHAT THEY DO REMAINS IN OUR HANDS IT IS OUR CHOICE AND THEIR LIVES AT STAKE LIKE DRIVING " OWN A PET RESPONSIBLY'

While I agree that owners should be held responsible for the havoc their dog(s) wreak....I also Firmly believe that people/kids who antagonize or provoke dogs into aggressive actions should be held accountable!! People feel safer abusing a dog or cat because they can't speak or defend themselves!!

My dogs were my other children and I am/was responsibile for their actions. My children were taught not to litter and I didn't allow my dogs to make the neighborhood their community bathroom....think it's called common sense and respect.....I am aware that a friend in Ohio had both her dogs in her house when two young males broke in...they hit the smaller dog ( reason it was barking nonstop at them) and the older dog tried to protect it's companion ...boys got scared and ran fronm the house. One fell broke a leg and guess what the dog owner was sued in court....PLEASE can we get back to common senseBoy's parents should have paid the bill, and hope that it changed the kid's mind about a life of crime not paying.....

It takes A LOT of work to own a dog responsibly. Many people see getting a dog as getting a cute friend to walk with and travel around. They forget about training, vet bills, feeding bills. It's a joy to own a dog but it is not to be undertaken without acknowledging the time investment that comes with it. TRAIN DON'T COMPLAIN.

What is responsible?
Accidents do happen. My Nikki Kaye showed me she could easily leap the 5 foot chain link fence in the backyard one day from a standing position. We then put up a 6 foot privacy fence. We never left Nikki outside by herself (Black German Shepherd) and I was with her the day she decided to pop over it. (I had to go out the gate to get her)
Dogs deemed vicious, aggressive, dangerous. Depends on the breed. GS are a very loyal dog, so their aggression isn't really from aggression, it's from being protective. THe Black being the largest of the breed and the most aggressive. Which is why the police like the Black GS. (which comes in handy at times:)

I agree, dog owners should be responsible if their dog is running around the neighborhood. A distant neighbor's dog runs loose all the time and June of last year came into my yard and attacked my cat. My dog, Sarah, tried to get her away from him, causing a tug-of-war. His reply to my request for half the vet bill: " Dogs and cats have always fought each other. It's not my responsibility and I won't pay." Even while Angel was still hurting she, when she was able to get around again, would go to Sarah and lick her. What else can I say?

Laurie thats a bunch of BS she shouldnt had to have paid for they broke into her house bogus judge what BS...that makes me mad...Dogs are and will protect their owners so why go after the owner if you break into their hourse and if your butt gets chewed up by the dogs protecting their home I have NO empathy towrds anyone who does this. Dogs always get the bad rap from some hoolium antagonizing a dog and such...got me on a dang roll here. Now loose dogs hummmmmmm...owners responibility for sure and that is why I do have and carry extra insurance on my home. My dogs have never gotten loose as of yet but whos to say someone will not open my gate one day and let them out???? Usually we have locks on them...LOL for this reason. But love your dog protecte him at all costs and last but not least dont break into my house fer sure...You will be hurt badly....LOL
