Fatwa Alone Will Not Stop FGM/C

A recent fatwa banning female genital mutilation/cutting in Mauritania will help reduce the practice only if religious leaders take the message to the people, scholars and anti-FGM/C activists say.

Such a barbaric practice. I hope there are enough progressive religious leaders in that nation to make a difference.

Thanks for the comment (You're so quick!!) At least it is a step forward, as many people believe the practice is religious and to know it ISN'T helps them to stop it. Although it will take time. But is it only in ”that nation" or some backward African countries (I'm not saying you are saying so) where barbaric/abusive practices prevail or took time to eradicate? We should look at our own backyards and see if there isn't such.

It is a start, it definitely will not stop the practice, but it is a good start. The more traditions are old and common, the harder it is to get rid of them, as barbaric as they are. So hopefully, step by step, it'll happen.

Religious leaders need to be educated in the modern science of what is acceptable behavior. The barbaric laws and practices of mutilation of young woman has to be stopped now.
