"At least 125 Palestinians in Gaza were wounded while torturing and slaughtering cattle in the streets as part of the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha, Palestinian media reported.

Gaza has five official slaughterhouses, but wait times were hours long, so a great many Gazans decided to do their own public butchering for the holiday, which is typically accompanied by much feasting.

But, as videos and pictures posted to the Internet revealed, many of the Palestinians did not contend themselves to simply slaughtering the animals, but first engaged in what can only be described as torture.

The cattle predictably responded by attacking their tormenters. The bloody scenes took place on public streets, and photographs showed adults and young children alike fleeing for their lives from the thrashing animals.

Many Gazans later complained that the copious amounts of blood and animal parts left in the streets was creating a health hazard.

These people all over the Islamic world throw spears at the cattle that die slowly, maddeningly. This is HALAL, permitted. This is animal torture.

Livestock killed in a kosher manner would never do this. To imply such a thing shows that you are quite ignorant of the massive differences.

Temple Grandin, an animal expert, gives a detailed report on kosher slaughter being the most humane in the world of all.

You are ignorantly equivocating something akin from Sharia amputations to surgeons operating in hospitals.

Purveyors of Moral Equivalency play a good part in promoting unnecessary, politically correct, factually wrong views that are a big part of what's wrong with this world.

Being a vegetarian I am opposed to eating any meat slaughtered in any manner. I find it particularly difficult to go through the holidays where the slaughter is on such a massive scale and when the smell of roasting flesh pervades the atmosphere. Goodness, we as humans have come such a long way from believing that animal sacrifices were needed to placate any god.

Go Vegetarian, save your health, save the world and perhaps see a new light. *

I do get it Patricia. Beth is on a Muslim Hate Fest and then there is the hypocrisy of it all when those who eat flesh claim to do it better than anyone else (even when they are themselves responsible for how others do it -- read that there is not enough facilities and we already know that food is limited and controlled by Israel).

But yeah, let's address that Kosher myth (starting with another recent post with video here at C2):

Four Israeli Glatt Kosher Slaughterhouse Workers Indicted For Gross Animal Cruelty

Four Israeli Glatt Kosher Slaughterhouse Workers Indicted For Gross Animal Cruelty

After an unusually long investigation, Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Haifa District Attorney’s office filed serious charges yesterday against four Adom Adom slaughterhouse workers, Ynet reported.

Adom Adom – Israel’s premier glatt kosher slaughterhouse located in Beit She’an – is owned by the Israeli giant food conglomerate Tnuva.

In December of last year, an undercover investigation aired by the Israeli television news show Kolbotek exposed extreme cruelty and violence against cows and sheep at Adom Adom, causing a nationwide furor.

Over the past several months, animal welfare organizations have reportedly protested what they saw as the delay in indictments in the case. They staged several demonstrations nationwide, including at least one which blocked the entrance to Adom Adom’s slaughterhouse.

Two of those organizations, Anonymous and Let Animals Live, also petitioned the High Court of Justice, demanding that Adom Adom be shut down and that shipments of animals to Adom Adom be ended because of what the groups alleged were serious transgressions of the country’s Animal Welfare Act.

Indictments were finally filed yesterday against the slaughterhouse line manager and assistant manager and two other workers.

Tnuva had previously removed the line manager but had replaced him with the assistant manager. Both men have now been criminally charged.

The line manager provided workers in the animal pre-slaughter holding area with electric shockers and allegedly allowed workers to use those electric shockers “without proper purpose and in a manner which caused pain and suffering to cattle, and they shocked the cattle as they walked from one place to another, by placing the shocker on different parts of the body of the calf, including sensitive areas [faces and genitals], even in cases where the cattle [had fallen and] were not physically capable of getting up, causing unnecessary pain and suffering [to the defenseless animals],” the indictment reportedly reads.

The indictment also reportedly says that the line manager sometimes ordered workers to unload sheep from their transports by grasping the front legs of one of the sheep and dragging it out of the transport vehicle so that the other lambs follow.

The deputy manager allegedly put a cigarette out on a calf's hoof, and grabbed another calf by its eye sockets, causing it extreme pain.

The two management-level defendants “tortured animals and were exceptionally cruel to them in an illegal manner…injur[ing them] in a number of cases.”

The two lower level contract workers who were indicted, “with the knowledge of their superiors, under their supervision, and at times facilitated by them, used to shock cattle with electric shockers as they were led from place to place, placing the shocker against different parts of the bodies of the cattle, including sensitive areas such as the scrotum, buttocks, abdomen, chest, neck, head and face," the indictment reportedly says.

Tnuva issued a statement condemning their employee’s actions and touting the changes it had made to Adom Adom since the Kolbotek exposé aired.

“Adom Adom condemns the behavior of animal abuse and condemned these unacceptable actions immediately when they were discovered. To repeat and emphasize, since the exposure of these distressing cases, Adom Adom has taken meaningful measures including dismissing the factory's manager, ending the work of the contract employees mentioned in the article, improving work procedures and others – in order to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.

"A draft of the indictment was received by Adom Adom and it is being thoroughly reviewed. The two employees mentioned within have been released on leave, and in no case will return to work with animals.

“Adom Adom will continue to raise its standard of operational excellence and ensure the excellent quality of its products to consumers,” Tnuva’s statement reportedly reads.

Anonymous praised the belated indictments but criticized the lack of indictments for senior level Adom Adom management and Tnuva.

We are "disappointed that once again blame is being placed on the 'gate-keepers.’ It is outrageous that the prosecutor’s office treats the meat corporations with kid gloves. The criminal responsibility for animal abuse rests primarily on Tnuva and on the slaughterhouse management, and they should be prosecuted at senior levels.… It was not the contract employees who purchased the stun guns and they were not the ones who instituted practices at the plant. Workers were documented beating cattle which failed to stand, electrifying them all over their bodies as they cried out in pain, and dragging them on the ground with a forklift. These are not exceptional cases, but [were] routine. All that's left is for consumers to point their forks, and refuse to sponsor abuse,” Anonymous said in a statement.

Let Animals Live attacked what it claims is the Ministry of Agriculture’s lax supervision of slaughterhouses nationwide.

"Employees of the Agriculture Ministry supervised the factory even before the expose on Kolbotek, and this did not prevent abuse. Even today the Agricultural Ministry refuses to impose effective supervision on slaughter [operations]. Even though we have appealed to them, the ministry refused to require poultry slaughterhouses to install cameras on the property, or to regularly watch via installed cameras in sheep and lamb slaughterhouses,” Let Animals Live reportedly said.

PETA Reveals Extreme Cruelty at Kosher Slaughterhouses

Kosher slaughter is intended to minimize animals' suffering. But undercover PETA investigations have revealed that Agriprocessors, the world's largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse, has been ignoring both the Jewish commitment to compassion and federal law—and animals endure prolonged suffering and nightmarish deaths as a result.

End 'cruel' religious slaughter, say scientists
Beasts should be stunned before their throats are slit, Jews and Muslims are told

Religious slaughter techniques practised by Jews and Muslims are cruel and should be ended, says a scientific assessment from the Government's animal welfare advisers.

The Farm Animal Welfare Council says that slitting the throats of the animals most commonly used for meat, chickens, without stunning, results in "significant pain and distress". The committee, which includes scientific, agricultural and veterinary experts, is calling for the Government to launch a debate with Muslim and Jewish communities to end the practice.

One Muslim organisation, the Halal Food Authority, already insists on the slaughterhouses it regulates stunning animals first on welfare grounds, as long as they are still alive when their throats are slit. But in other halal and almost all kosher slaughterhouses, animals have their throats slit without prior stunning which would render them insensible to the pain. Religious groups say that doing so would be against their interpretation of religious texts.

Scientists claim kosher and halal animal slaughter is 'inhumane and cruel
11.12.2012 15:33

90 Polish scientists have written a letter to Poland's prime minister saying that kosher and halal slaughtering methods are 'extremely cruel to animals'.

“Our position is not dictated by any dislike of religious practices and rituals but based solely on scientific knowledge and moral opposition to extreme forms of cruelty to animals,” reads the letter written by Dr Antoni Amirowicz at the Institute of Nature Conservation, Polish Academy of Sciences and Prof. Jerzy Bańbura of the Department of Experimental Zoology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Lodz.

The letter, supported by 90 Polish scientists, is in response to Poland's agriculture minister pledging to amend animal rights legislation to allow ritual animal slaughter, after the Polish Constitutional Court ruled on 27 November that kosher and halal methods of killing animals was inconsistant with Polish law.

On 7 December, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he would take expert advise before recommending a change in the law on the issue, which came to a head after animal rights activists called for a ban of the Jewish and Muslim slaughtering methods in Poland.

The court ruled that in 2007, an agricultural minister over-stepped his powers when changing Poland's 1997 animal rights law to bring it in line with EU guidelines, which say that long-established religious practices can be exempt from legislation on slaughtering animals for meat.

The junior coalition partner, the Polish Peasants party (PSL) - who the current agricultural minister is a member of – has argued that banning kosher and halal slaughtering practices, which forbid the animal being stunned before being bled to death, would deprive Poland of millions of zloty in exports to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel and other countries.

But the letter written by scientists claims the practice - banned in Sweden, an EU member - is extremely cruel to animals.

“Research carried out by an international group of experts on the ritual in slaughterhouses confirmed that the slaughter carried out through slits to the throat and bleeding with no loss of consciousness is extremely inhumane and causes unimaginable suffering to the animal. We appeal to you when deciding on ritual slaughter to take into account the facts established by numerous research [into the method of slaughter],” the letter says.

New EU legislation, which comes into force at the beginning of 2013 says that religious practices must be respected in the area of animal rights – though Poland can still opt out of the new law.

No political party has supported the Constitutional Court ruling, however, fearful of trampling on religious sensitivities among Poland's small Jewish and Muslim communities on the issue.

Thanks for your comments Syd. The "hate fest" that's been going on for quite some time, is pretty obvious.
"Glass houses"... indeed. Note the "sources" - "Sharia Unveiled"/"Israel Today"..
Sharia Unveiled has been used at Care2 for stories. What some may not know, or care about, is that it is known to be an Islamaphobic hate site.

The video shows people in the process of incapacitating the animal with ropes.. frightening for the animal. The ordeal, advertised here, is exploited for purposes beyond the concern for animal welfare.

It is clear that the nature of these posts are far from being unbiased, project hate, and lack balance and full disclosure in reporting.

"Many Gazans later complained that the copious amounts of blood and animal parts left in the streets was creating a health hazard. "

How on earth can people complain about a health hazard their own wanton disregard and disrespect for animals created by their deity created? That is insanity times insanity. I can't watch the video, I won't. But this kind of cruelty has no place in a modern world. PETA is right about this and as extreme as they can be, they have the moral high ground. Dog fighting, bull fighting, cock fighting and these religious murderous celebrations are all blasphemy against life itself. Any who practice barbarity upon animals have no moral standards at all. We are stewards of this planet, not conquerors. We should treat every life form on it with the respect that life, the most precious gift of all, demands, deserves. Nothing less should be acceptable. Get the eff out of the cave man era and into the 21st century and treat this world and the life on it with the love and respect it deserves.

Note, that according to 'Israel Today' paper, 125 Palestinians were wounded while torturing..."...
.. "Palestinian media reported", according to 'Israel Today' report.

Note, no Palestinian report, source is given, no date or exact location of alleged event.
The video, for those, who understandably did not wish to see, particularly in view of the sensationalistic posting, does not show the slaughter of the animal. It shows a group of men with ropes, taking several minutes to rope the animal. The last seconds of the video are blurred, and may or may not indicate the animal was killed. There is no sign of blood anywhere, and I did not see any evidence that anyone was hurt, especially not 125.
There were not even 125 people present. Most, apparently, by standers, watching. Several others, worked as a group to restrain the animal..

Having seen the above video,
(and others, actually involving cruel and shocking slaughter and abuse of animals, including cattle, pigs and chickens, that are too shocking and hard for many to watch, including myself),
I would be inclined to reserve judgement.
It is pointless to form an opinion on here say, or without actually seeing any video, for myself. It would be foolish, and serve no purpose, other than to dupe or be misled.

animals, who can't fight back, are tortured by too many people in too many places. it is the religious element of this story which jumps out. it's as though these men find some kind of religious justification for their unconscionable behaviour - it dehumanises them, if they weren't already dehumanised by the way they have been educated.

I have not seen anyone at Care2 condone any form of animal cruelty. Many of us come to try to make a difference and appeal for change and education and an end to abhorrent animal abuse, wherever it may be.
Googling, "animal slaughter" - shows the widespread abuse of animals.
I forego F/B, generally, as I am an advocate for the cessation of exploitation of animals on the internet and graphic violence, whether it be of animals or humans.
Education is the answer, hopefully.
The video presented does not appear to accompany the story from Israel Today. That said, there is no doubt that animal slaughter, too often, causes unnecessary and cruel suffering, that many want to end.
There was an interesting story at Care2 several months ago -

"Is religion bad for animals?" ( 7/27/2013).

It is painfully clear that the cow in the posted video was terrified and suffered. Whether or not the video depicts the narrative from the report, is a separate issue.

I have seen some horrifying, inhumane animal slaughter footage show appalling, sometimes graphic, abuses, that are immediately apparent, cruel and reprehensible, in the U.K. and U.S.

"HSUS undercover video that led authorities to shut down the Bushway Packing slaughter plant. This footage includes inhumane handling and slaughter of days-old veal calves."

Report from google.

"Horrifying undercover footage inside a California slaughterhouse shows incompetent workers standing on the mouth and nostrils of a cow to suffocate it after failing to kill it with a bolt-gun." 26 Oct 2013

The daily mail article/video, and others like it, are repulsive and shocking. Exposure and education are fundamental to increase awareness and work for accountability and change in slaughterhouse and animal abuse in the meat industry.

Syd, you and jessica appear every time Beth, David, Rahman, Stan, or any of the rest of us post an article.
You, like so many who cherry-pick isolated incidents, will find a single article or two or three, and scream, *Kosher Slaughter is Inhumane*. That's simply a rash generalization and absurd at best.
Even within the body of your own articles, it's stated repeatedly that religious and legal steps were taken immediately to resolve the abuses.
In Islam, not only will measures not be taken to stop the abuses, the people will be ENCOURAGED to continue these practices.
If I might add, you certainly have a nasty little surly streak in you! I stand proud with my people in our respect for life and the desire to improve quality of life for all.

I do not condone cruelty of any kind towards any animals by any people, no matter who they are, what country they come from, or what religion they are. Cruelty is cruelty, barbarism is barbarism, ALL should be stopped. Everyone needs to take a long, hard look at themselves - do you support cruelty of any kind? Do you eat animals? Are you a hypocrite? Look to yourself.

I know that there are insensitive, careless, hurtful people in the farm animal slaughterhouses. No doubts and these things should be publicized.

And so should this. But there is a distinction made here. This type of slaughter of EID practiced in many Islamic countries around the world, is a festive event, where almost all of the Muslim men laugh as the cattle, sheep and goats go down. They think this is funny. This laughter is repeated hundreds of millions of times.

The slaughter method, taking a spear-like implement and throwing it to hopefully in the jugular vein is cruel and inhuman. Again, this is considered a festival of happiness. There is so much blood in the streets that people and animals slip in it.

Kosher slaughter is nothing like the celebration of Eid. Yes it would be better if humans didn't slaughter any animals, but that's another issue.

Exception is taken here by some, I think, because "Palestinian" is in the title.

Barbara, again you are spewing complete untruths with no basis in fact. I do not show up on those posts so prove your claims. If you can make such baseless accusations here then perhaps everything, all of it that you say is utter BS.

As if I am not allowed on those posts anyway. Pfft! Not your decision to make.

Funny though you would bring up cherry-picking here of all places. :D

Respect life for all... except those you belittle here of course. :D

Again, glass houses.

One can be relatively assured that if this article wasn't about "Palestinians" and the degree to which Syd and jessica b. hold them to be sacrosanct, regardless of the evidence.

You can also bet that if this was about ISRAELIS doing such a thing would be having cows of their own - and Jewish Israelis do NOT have anything like this is their religion - even though Syd and jessica b tried to insinuate that "Samaritans" who aren't even Jewish - are just as bad as the Palestinians and other Arabs who do this.

What this article that Beth posted has hit a raw nerve for Syd and jessica b., because there is NOTHING REMOTELY like this in Judaism, and they are at wits end because they really have nothing to swipe back with, except things that are irrelevant and don't speak to the issue.

This article, by the way, doesn't mean that all Palestinians are bad people, but it does show that throwing spears and trying to hit the jugular veins of animals, and thinking that Allah approves of this horror, and the attendant laughing, IS amongst many, many other examples CHARACTERISTIC of the cruelty to animals that is pervasive across Islamic cultures in many countries and of peoples of different races.

Touching the "holy cow" myth that Palestinians are just victims, can do no wrong, is something that, you should forgive the expression, really gets Syd's and jessica's goat.

All of the attacks on Barbara are the way they choose to deal with it. This is true time and time again of the pro-Pally crowd, who line up salivating at the chance to make Israel and Jews look bad. Syd and jessica are standing in their own puddles of saliva.

Syd, it seems rather odd that for someone who professes that all animals have the right to live, you've yet to make an unbiased comment about animal slaughter.

*124,000 land animals are killed for food each and every second by ALL religions and for all sorts of holidays including LAMB FOR PASSOVER.*
*But yeah, let's address that KOSHER MYTH (starting with another recent post with video here at C2): *
*these apply to those who consume KOSHER as well: *

So, are we to understand that you condone religiously sanctioned and encouraged Muslim atrocities because of the rare, isolated instances of abuse by Jews that you've quoted? You do understand, don't you, that those instances were condemned both civilly and religiously?

I would think that you'd be speaking out against a *religion* that encourages and rewards violence, murder, torture, rape, animal cruelty, slavery.........Good G*d, you're a woman ~ can you condone their treatment of women and children?
Instead, you seem to be trying to make them look good by rather comically trying to make Judaism a scapegoat.

Oh, and *Pfft* ?? Really??

I hope they die and if they do this next year I hope they get more. Is this why I would rand up for Palestinians-so they can torture animals?I do but may rethink my position on what they deserve.

I did not watch the video or even glance at the picture. I consider myself a Jew but an atheist Jew. This is one of the various reasons why I do not like religion-so much violence is down in its name. If there was a God/Allah do you really think he would condone this in his name?

Is there a petition to sign to stop the horrific torture of these innocent animals. I wish they were all killed instead of injured. No sympathy for those evil people.
