Extremists from the Islamic State have killed at least 500 people, including women and children, Iraqi officials said. Some of the victims were buried alive.

The killings reported by Iraqi Human Rights Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to Reuters add to a long list of atrocities reportedly committed by the radical group in Iraq and neighboring Syria, where it wants to create a caliphate.

"We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing [their ancient home city of] Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic State have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar," Sudani said.

"Some of the victims, including women and children were buried alive in scattered mass graves in and around Sinjar," he added. Some 300 women were kidnapped as slaves, he said.

Hundreds of Yazidi minority women taken captive by ISIS in Iraq

Yazidis are one of many Iraqi minorities persecuted by the Islamic State, which adheres to a fundamentalist branch of Sunni Islam. The militants offer people living in territories they control to either convert to their faith or face death.

At least 300 Yazidi families in the villages of Koja, Hatimiya, and Qaboshi, which were surrounded by the Islamists, are being forced into converting, witnesses reported on Saturday.

The threat posed by the militant offensive sent an estimated 130,000 of Iraqis, many of them Yazidis, fleeing for their lives. They are seeking refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan, where Kurd militias have been battling with the Islamic State for weeks.

According to UN reports, at least 40,000 Yazidis have been stranded in several locations on Mount Sinjar in north of Iraq, where food and water are scarce.

The refugees rely on airdrops for survival and the hardship has already claimed dozens of lives, especial of children.

picture yourself as isis. you have a couple of hundred fighters moving into kurdish land after the kurds interfered in the refinery. these numbskulls decided to put their faith on kurdish fighters when in Sinjar 5000 kurdish peshmerga were over run by less than 100 isis.
so far in the caliphate if you mind your business you're left alone. but if you back one of the many factions fighting isis you will attract isis's attention.
the 500 killed were fighters. the ones buried alive were peshmerga fighters. no women and children were killed. those are iraqi lies. but yes, women were taken as sex slaves. Yazidi' women are white, and among the most beautiful on earth.

WTF.
Justin, you seem to be an apologist for these animals. This is not the 5th Century and I sincerely hope that each and every one of the ISIS asshole are caught and summarily executed. Of course after being fairly tried as terrorist and found guilty. The only way to fight inhumanity is with inhumanity. Call in the napalm and take no ISIS prisoners. The innocents and ISIS victims may be better of dead that continue to suffer their current cruel tortures.

Justin, unless you mean something else, it is easy to understand how Phil understands what you are saying, that somehow the Kurds deserve what's been happening to them by ISIS.

If you mean something different, please clarify.

the qataris must be so tickled by those here who believe israel is running some kind of conspiracy. their whole PR machine has been built on a strategy of misdirection, pointing the finger at israel (and jewish people) and blaming them for crimes islamists have been committing for decades. misogyny, homophobia, racism, ethnic cleansing and all the rest are the very building blocks of totalitaian islamic societies.

this is yet another example of islamic ethnic cleansing.

Thank you Hilary . I think that Mr. Vale should wear a large cross or dress as an orthodox Jew . If wearing a cross wear a sign saying peace, Jesus loves you . Walk about in a Moslem area here in Israel or the P.A. . They will shove the cross where the sun does not shine and use his head for a soccer ball .
