islam is a religion of more than a billion people worldwide. There is a notion that muslims are violent people.if this notion is true then the world would have already ended from the destruction of such a large number of people with such a believe. The reality is that only a small minority of less than one percent are the one's who tend to act violently. This is because they have their own agendas that they want to push and not for the sake of islam. This is vividly seen from the majority of peaceful muslims living and practicing their religion without disturbing is not fair to provoke a large group of muslims who live their lives in peace and harmony.

The point is not that Muslims are violent people, the point is that a person should be able to criticize Islam without fear of punishment or, as we here in America do call them Islamophobic to shut them up.

GOOD FOR ICELAND! Honest criticism is totally acceptable (IF NOT NECESSARY) when religion gets too full of itself and tries to control everyone around it.

"Blasphemy" is an outdated concept which shouldn't exist anywhere.

It's strange that a tiny country like Iceland has to show the rest of the world what needs to be done.
At least it's a start. Thanks Beth.

I agree that one can not generalize the crimes of Islamic fundamentalist groups with start a persecution of Muslims, that is, to create one Islamophobic sentiment, although applaud Iceland by an important step regarding the inalienable right of expression.

Noted!! I have just left a short comment on the News post about the S. Carolina governor that signed into law about the flag. It was in reference to David (I think was his name) who wrote a book about the flag and it dividing this country. That the stars & strips should be the only flag or some c*** like that. My comment was: To David: "What are you going to say one day when another race tells you that our "stars & strips" is dividing this nation and must come down? Trust me. It is coming and sooner than you think. " I am a devout wolf advocate among other things. My dream is to one day live in the wilderness among these beautiful creatures. I wonder if Iceland has any wolves?? I will have to research that. HUGS TO ALL WHO CARE FROM TEXAS

I wonder how long it'll be before there's a terror attack in Iceland or on an Icelandic Consulate abroad?

Expression of freedom of speech is one thing. Tolerance of freedom of speech is something else ... For the latter, no amount of legislation can keep you safe.

I understand your point,...but don't judge islam by looking at muslims, study islam and you will realise that you have the wrong information about islam. If islam was as you say,...please ponder on this fact,...
"when the prophet Mohammed was the head of the islamic state in madina,...there existed churches with christian as well as synagougs with jews...They all lived in harmony. From my studies i have come to realise it is not the religion that is a problem but some of the followers are the problem.
We have been living in harmony for a long time....There are a group who wish to push their own agendas, and by doing such a thing is playing into their hands. The life of a human is very sacred. It is not a problem to criticise but it is not wise or right to moke and make cartoons of someone revered by many. There is a need of focusing on the root of the problem and not playing in the hands of politicians who are only aiming for their benefit

Hi Beth,...

Muslims believe that all words and action done by the prophet are direct instruction from the lord Almighty. That is they believe his actions and words are the practical interpretation of the holy Quran,a book of which is considered to be the words of God.My point is this,....

Prophet Mohammed lived with all religions in his lifetime,...he never started a war against any religion,...he even invited christians inside the Holiest mosque just to have a chat on religious matter,...All battles he fought in his lifetime were fought not more than 50 miles from his home thus meaning they were defensive battles. This is Mohammed, this is islam.
The Kingdom of God does not belong to Muslims or Christians or any other religion, belongs to those who are humble human beings and protect justice without religious bais, any learned muslim knows that.It is not true that by definition they are bad, they are actually the true muslims since they do what their prophet did.
i quote these words from the man who was raised by the prophet,...reveered by his generosity...feaverd for his courage in battle,...and envied for his religiousness. In his letter to one of Governors when he became the leader,...he said"....the people are either your fellow muslims in faith or your brothers in humanity,so be fair and just to all"

Peace and justice for all is the spirit for islam no hidden agenda

I really don't think that it is true that "in most countries in Europe, people are fired from their jobs, fined, and thrown in jail for criticizing Islam." I would like to see SOME EVIDENCE of this!

If, however, what the author calls 'criticizing Islam' is, in fact, islamophobic hate speech... then perhaps, yes: people may be fired and/or fined -and perhaps, even sentenced to jail- for hate speech, which constitutes incitement to hatred of a group -ethnic, racial or religious- as such. Hate speech is as ugly and dangerous as the prejudice it arises from and the violence that it all to often engenders.

Fomenting hatred foments violence! Campaigns to vilify, denigrate, stereotype & dehumanize a minority group are always the prelude to genocide. And, without going to that extreme, they act as incitement and justification for individual acts of violence and atrocities, HATE CRIMES against that minority group. They lead to persecution & discrimination, too! Democracies are not BOWING to Islam when they seek to protect citizens from hate speech and hate crimes! We should all be appalled by them!

People, take a look at the Genocide Watch site, and, specifically, "The Ten Stages of Genocide" - Classification / Symbolization / Discrimination / Dehumanization / Organization / Polarization / Preparation / Persecution / Extermination / Denial What the director of the site says about the phase of 'Dehumanization' is of particular pertinence here: "Members [of the target group] are equated with ANIMALS, VERMIN, INSECTS or DESEASES. Dehumanization OVERCOMES the NORMAL HUMAN REVULSION against MURDER. At this stage, hate propaganda in print and on hate radios is used to vilify the victim group. In combating this dehumanization, incitement to genocide SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED with protected speech. Genocidal societies LACK CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION for countervailing speech, and should be treated differently than democracies. Local and international leaders should CONDEMN the use of hate speech and make it culturally UNACCEPTABLE. Leaders who incite genocide should be banned from international travel and have their foreign finances frozen. Hate radio stations should be shut down, and hate propaganda banned. Hate crimes and atrocities should be promptly PUNISHED."

Why were 8 innocent people, praying in their EAM South Carolina church, shot down and killed? This is a tragic example of what prejudice & racism bring about. We may think that 'all religion is lies and superstition,' but no one, whether Jewish, Christian, Buddhist OR Muslim, deserves being persecuted, discriminated against or MURDERED for his beliefs. Of course, these people were not gunned down for being Christian, but for being African-Americans! But it is true, nonetheless!

Some people on this thread, under the guise of applauding Iceland, are participating and contributing to the spread of Muslim hate speech.

It is both appalling and pathetic!

The more cerebral (intellectual) atheists among us (Freya, myself) can argue that "There is no such thing as blasphemy! All religion is lies and superstition," but the fact remains that blasphemy can be extremely offensive to people who practice and believe the dogma of any given religion. We should weigh the value of speaking any given truth with that of causing offense to members of a given creed: is our idea, are our thoughts WORTH causing offense? Are they going to serve a higher objective of bringing about greater knowledge and understanding, or are we just using freedom of speech to insult a group or their religion?

This isn't submitting to pressure; it's a matter of good manners & civilized behavior! If you go to a neighbor's BBQ, and you think your neighbor (who happens to be severely overweight) is eating too much, do you say so? Do you say, "Hey, fatso, if you go on eating sausages like that, you're going to get even fatter and uglier?"

No, you don't say that to your neighbor, and NOT because you're afraid she'll slug you one! You don't say it,
because it is gratuitous & nasty!

To those who think hate speech isn't dangerous:

16 April 2015 - Islamophobic attacks rocket by 500% since Charlie Hebdo murders :

Attacks on Muslims and other Islamophobic acts in France have surged 500 percent since the Charlie Hebdo murders, new figures reveal.

There were 222 anti-Muslim acts recorded in the first quarter of 2015, compared with just 37 over the same period last year, according to the French Council of the Muslim Faith.

Abdallah Zekri, president of the Observatory for the Fight against Islamophobia, said: “These anti-Muslim acts resulted in violent assaults on men and women, some pregnant.

“Not since the observatory was established in 2011 have we seen an implosion of anti-Muslim acts, whether actions, threats or on social networks.”

The European Network Against Racism says anti-Muslim acts this year have included grenade attacks on mosques and the stabbing to death of a man in the region near Avignon, linked to Islamophobia.

It comes amid a climate of rising racism and hate speech highlighted in a Council of Europe report, which revealed anti-Semitic acts had nearly doubled in the first half of 2014.

France was home to around 4.7 million Muslims in 2010, according to estimates by the Pew Research Center, making up 7.5 percent of the population.

France was second to Germany, which, with 4.8m, had Europe’s biggest Muslim population in 2010.

Pegida is still holding weekly anti-Islam marches in Dresden, which far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders attended earlier this month.

Most of the Islamophobic attacks in France in the first quarter of 2015 came in January, indicating a strong link with the murders in Paris. .../... "

We should be striving for harmony & social justice in our communities & countries, and divisive racist propaganda against minority groups, whatever the basis, is absolutely counterproductive. We must learn to live in peace with our neighbors, on every level, from local to global, despite the existence of ISIL! ISIL is NOT representative of Muslims worldwide; on the contrary!!

Saying that Muslims are, on the whole, peaceful, peace-loving people, who have the same values of family, love and compassion as any people the world over is not PROPAGANDA, as someone here said in response to Ali Akbar's reasonable Friday July 10, 2015, 8:21 am comment. It's true!

I'm so sick of hearing how "peaceful" Islam is, how "considerate" it is, how "compassionate" it is. None of that is true, just read the Koran and the Haditha's then look at how Muslims treat their women and children as well as their attitude towards non-muslims, pathetic, disgusting, 12th century.....Great job Iceland, I hope the morons don't start killing your leaders.

Ali Akbar, it is obvious you are parroting the propaganda you have been told to believe and you have never read the Qur'an, hadith or sirah, all of which proudly boast of Mohammed's having people tortured, hundreds beheaded while he counted their wealth he had stolen, the caravans he robbed, the victims he kidnapped for ransom or sold into slavery, his sexual debauchery, his rape if captive women, his owning of sex slaves, his "marriage" to a 6 year old child and having sex with her, his harem of "wives", his attacking people without provocation, his becoming a warlord when he moved to Medina and forcing everyone to join his new tribal cult or die or flee. And all of this is condoned by your hateful god. What kind of god hates his own creation like Allah does and revels in the torment he will give to nonmuslims in his hell. Sick.

Islamic scripture is full of hate and calls for killing nonmuslims. The Qur'an is not written in chronological order and much was lost when muslims were killing each other for power after Mohammed died. Apparently Allah, the name iof the ancient pagan Arab chief deity (Allah Akbar was being yelled long before Mohammed) and Mohammed neither one had the foresight to see this happening.

The last 2 surahs written were 5 & 9 and later verses abrogate all earlier verses so verse 9:5 calling for Muslims to kill nonmuslims "wherever you find them" and to strike off their heads and even their fingers cancels 113 earlier more tolerant verses you Muslims are so quick to quote, knowing they are canceled.

I challenge you to read your own books and see if you can still believe Mohammed and Allah are as good as you hope they are. They are not. I have read them all and I have never read such silly, laughable, disgusting and evil writings masquerading as religion in my life if studying religions.

If Muslims really knew who and what Mohammed really was, clearly told in Islamic writings including the Qur'an, they would leave Islam in the millions - which they are already doing despite the death penalty for doing so - the only religion that calls for the killing of those who don't belong to it, criticize it or leave it. Not the wishes of a loving god.

No wonder Muslims are so afraid of questions or criticism of Islam. It cannot survive that. Truth welcomes those things. False teachings fear them.

Jay S (116)

Ali A, BTW, it is estimated that 20% of Muslims are true believers who follow Mohammed's violent and debauched example and his teachings to the letter, like Boko Harem, Islamic State, al Queda et al.

Dr. Zudi Jasser, for one, is a Muslim who states this figure and he calls for Islam to reform and renounce all the hate teachings, which of course is not possible without admitting it is all a disgusting sham.

And I haven't even mentioned Islam's blasphemy of Jesus Christ in the eyes of Christians. Yet they don't riot, burn mosques and massacre Muslims, yet Muslims are ethnically cleansing Christians, Jews and all others from the lands that once were theirs before Islam conquered them by brutal force and has oppressed them for 1400 years. But never has a Muslim apologized or criticized Islam's cruel and bloody history of conquest - 80 million Hindus, Buddhists and Jains butchered in the Muslim conquest of India alone. Maybe you can be the first Muslim to condemn Islam's brutal history without whitewashing it and excusing it with fairy tales of how all these lands rushed to join Islam because it was so wonderful, despite the fact your own Islamic writings happily describe this bloody history.

Time for you to open your eyes and mind.

Just like on Care2. No dissent on Islam! I guess Prince Talalalweeedbinwahlalal's $32 Billion is already being put to great use right here on CAIR2, where you can't say nothing wrong 'bout good o' Islam, and how they're tryin to take over EVERYTHING so yah just can't find anything, except lies, about the old political fascist movement, going totalitarian right here in America.

Anyone who used to take the good ol' USA for granted. It's gone, honey. O'bozo made a nice deal with the devil. They have those funny red things on their heads and think they cool, cause they have oil that made them rich, and besides, Moh told them they're superior. "Muslims believe that all words and action done by the prophet are direct instruction from the lord Almighty. That is they believe his actions and words are the practical interpretation of the holy Quran,a book of which is considered to be the words of God"

Waow you got something right
except the koran was written by the caliph uthman and a committee and all other versions that they did not like were ordered burned and the resultant book was then sent to alla for confirmation

As to mohammed
A man who thieved, whose word could not be trusted, who had people tortured ,murdered, who authorised rape
and had a predilection for young girls and often sucked on the tongues of young boys -- read your hadith
Even the koran has nothing good to say about infidels/kafirs -- the hadith tell you how to operate these instructions following in the footsteps of that most excellent of exemplary conduct - the desert bandit himself

yep denial is a river in Egypt
