Making compost in a garbage bag (also known as anaerobic composting) is by far the simplest way to make compost. It's free, requires no tools and you probably already have all the materials in your home to start making garbage bag compost.

I decided to do this last summer after having great difficulty retrieving the compost from my (shop bought) compost bin. It's so much easier using bags; they can be stacked and squeezed into awkward corners where a bin would never fit and when the compost is ready to be used it's already bagged and good to go - no shoveling out from a compost bin with a door that's too small to allow proper access.
Thanks for posting such a useful and helpful article, Kathryn.

I would add that it's best to compost leaves separately as they take longer to rot down than other materials. Shredding the leaves will speed up the process - run them over with a lawn mower if you don't have a leaf blower/vac/shredder. Leaf mould is a great soil additive and can be mixed with garden compost to form potting compost.

Thank you for your advice, Donna. I usually just have a pile. This will be my first time to use bags. Actually, my daughter is paying someone to rake my leaves and it is the custom here to leave the bags by the street for the city to pick up. I'm going to have the raker put my bags in my backyard!!! I'll run out and add some water before he ties them up. :)

Luckilly our city picks up compost with the garbage. It's made a huge difference in how much we throw out.
