Some 2,500 Catholics of the Nigerian diocese of Maiduguri have been violently killed by the Muslim terrorists known as Boko Haram, according to Catholic Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme. The bishop has joined thousands of other Christians who have taken refuge at St Teresa parish in the town of Yola in Adamawa state. Boko Haram has focused its campaign of murder and dispossession in the northeastern quarter of Nigeria, with the goal of imposing Muslim religious law throughout the oil-rich country. Bishop Doeme is the shepherd of the Diocese of Maiduguri, which lies within the conflictive region.

Contacted by Spero News, Nigerian-American lawyer and activist Emanuel Ogebe said “This report is emerging from the same diocese that reported that 50 out of 52 churches had been attacked by Boko Haram and this was over a year ago. The number of churches attacked in just this one catholic diocese in Nigeria is more than the worst violence against Coptic Christians in 700 years which claimed less than 50 churches.”

Ogebe went on to say on September 17, “The death toll of 2500 Catholics killed is more than double the entire Christians killed worldwide in 2012 based on data provided by World Watch Monitor. It is not clear what period this data covers but it is still phenomenal nonetheless. Given Boko Haram's recent claim that it killed 1000 Christians after the capture of Gwoza, and considering that it has captured about half a dozen towns since last month, such high casualty figures would appear plausible.”

Maiduguri is the capital city of Borno, while the diocese encompasses all of Borno and the state of Yobe, along with parts of Adamawa state. It is in thesethree states where Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan decreed a state of emergency in 2013. So far, Nigerian security forces have had limited success in controlling the terrorists, including the recent conquest of places where Boko Haram has declared a “Caliphate.”

Christians who have fled to Yola narrowly escaped death at the hands of Boko Haram. Parents have been separated from their children in the haste to escape, and are seeking to find lost family members. Bishop Doeme denounced Nigeria’s security forces for dereliction of duty, citing instances of their summary retreat in the face of Boko Haram assaults, thus exposing innocent civilians to harm. The bishop also accused the military of corruption.

The Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference Commission for Justice and Peace, along with Caritas, have issued a statement affirming “the simple truth is that Nigeria is at war.”

Bishop Doeme noted that Nigerian soldiers abandon their posts and flee in the face of Boko Haram assaults. He lamented that this is often because soldiers have noted the lack of support given by the government to widows and families of fallen soldiers. When asked why soldiers flee, Bishop Doeme said this is “because if they die, who will take care of their family.” Another factor, he said, is the lack of sufficient weapons and ammunition.

Doeme has called on Nigeria’s government to step up its fight against the Muslim insurgents. The devastation and death caused by the marauders, he said, is nearly “unbelievable.”

In Calabar, southeastern Nigeria, Rev. Evaristus Bassey of Caritas averred on September 11 that conditions for refugees in northeastern Nigeria are catastrophic. Equally disturbing, said the priest, is the attitude of politicians towards the plight of fellow Nigerians. Reading from a statement entitled “Let Us Adjust Our Lifestyles to Reflect the Ongoing War,” Fr Bassey said: “On behalf of Caritas Nigeria and JDPC, the humanitarian and human development organs of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, I hereby express concern over the seemingly persistent and unabated situation in the North East. The simple truth is that Nigeria is at war.”

Chrislam is rubbish. Nearly two hundred verses in the Quran urging followers to kill and oppress unbelievers. Reform or renounce or there will never be peace in the world.

Wherever they go they bring death and suffering. Why was the world so slow to react to this persecution??

Because the suffering is by Christians, one only has to look at Obama's attitude to know how the other Western government feels.

Ismail, you obviously don't know Islam. Muslims kill Muslims because they decided that those Muslims were not following Islam properly so must be considered as dhimmis and should be killed.

Then there is the ethnic cleansing of Christians as well as any other non-Muslim.

In Nigeria we are seeing the 109 statements from the koran about killing non-Muslims especially the people of the Book ie Jews and Christians.

Terrorists are terrorists....any excuse to kill.....nothing to do with religion or anything else for that matter. They are just blatant murderers. Thanks for sharing.

news organizations have failed to see and understand the muslim's media strategy as part of a long global jihad war and the readers of the news as such as well.
What is also troubling is that some in the USA want to bring religion back into our govt. As if no one can pray at home or in their places of worship and women aren't intelligent enough to be able to have control of their reproductive organs.

and there are "useful idiots:" (proper name : dhimmi) who are supporting the islamists strategy of blaming the victims and posing themselves as victims of the "fascist:" West !

President Goodluck Johnson is a worthless joke. When the ~300 schoolgirls were kidnapped in April, he dragged his feet for weeks. Not enough $$ in rescuing them. And that internet meme is so passé now.

The thing is ... these are not just catholics, muslims, jews or whatever. They are people! 2500 PEOPLE were killed. Maybe we are taking the labels too far and it is time to just look at the basics.

PEOPLE are killing PEOPLE. And it has to stop somehow.

Totally agree with Lorna's comment here.

People are killing people.

Further labeling is futile and irrelevant, because, we all die, regardless of our age, religious or non-religious persuasion, gender, etc. We still die.

I am a proud infidel. People who use their religion for death or for bringing harm to others must not be allowed to function in any nation. A nation's laws come first, not religious laws.

Lorna & Darren, any murder/war etc is people killing people for some reason and should be condemned.

However, we are looking at the reason that this is happening and, sadly, Islam is all about murdering/killing the non-Muslim. In fact, some two thirds of the koran is dedicated to behaviour towards the non-Muslim and none of it is nice. Then there is Mohammed's behaviour which good Muslims are exhorted to follow and he was an untrustworthy murdering bandit! Boko Harem and others in Africa are merely following their instructions which have not changed in 1400 years and we see on a regular basis. For those of you who don't want to see the pictures the enemy is beheaded and Christians are crucified. Women and children of all religions are taken prisoner and used as sex slaves.
