Todays problems are not political, they are criminal. This is not about left versus right, it is about right versus wrong...So think back throughout all of history and see if you can find one example of a tyranny ending after being defeated by vigils.

"This is a message to all the well meaning people out there who try their best to make this world a better place, but in fact have no impact on the world, whatsoever. It is time to take your activism seriously.

The time has come to stop your ineffective tantrums and get serious. There are two ways to effect change when it comes to government: passive resistance and revolution. Our republic is broken and we no longer have representatives in government. Constantly asking our elected representatives to legislate on our behalf is not only a waste of time, but also totally unnecessary in a government that no longer represent us..

Actually it is a Catch-22. We live in a communication age. We have the Internet, e-mail, cell phones, land phones, faxes, postal mail and megaphones with which to contact anyone, anywhere, at any time of the day or night. Still, we are told to get on buses and trains so we can march in Washington DC to tell a handful of government officials who don’t even know we are there to do what they were elected to do.

The only legitimate purpose of such a trip at this point in time should be to remove those ineffective representatives and leaders and replace them with people who would honor their oaths of office and actually represent the people who put them there!

I keep getting e-mail and phone calls from organizations asking me to attend “vigils” to take back the nation. Let me tell you something...vigils are to activism what masturbation is to sex. It might make you feel good but nobody else benefits. At least call it what it is...a whining defeat celebration. Why not use your time effectively, like getting people together to plan real change rather than real noise...."

"The Vietnam conflict was ended by those who organized sit-ins and takeovers, not vigils."

RIGHT; and it was ALSO ended by MASSIVE RESISTANCE WITHIN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY; soldiers REFUSING TO FIGHT the designated "enemy"; SAILORS COMMITTING SABOTAGE ON MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR NUCLEAR VESSELS THAT DIS-ABLED THEM FOR MONTHS AT A TIME; even AIR FORCE PILOTS LISTENING TO THEIR CONSCIENCES AND REFUSING TO BOMB.

These FACTS have been BURIED by our press and official "histories" of that era.

See the film, "SIR! NO SIR!" about resistance within the Army during the Viet Nam era; BRINGING THE WAR TO A HALT when the powers-in-charge COULDN'T DEPEND ON THEIR TROOPS FIRING THEIR WEAPONS AT THE VIETNAMESE ANY MORE.

There was CLOSE CO-OPERATION between the CIVILIAN MOVEMENT and the MILITARY RESISTANCE. There was COMMUNICATION between them; and actions were CO-ORDINATED.

ONE COULD NOT HAVE BROUGHT THE WAR TO A CLOSE WITHOUT THE OTHER.

THE SAME WILL HAVE TO HAPPEN HERE AND NOW, WITH THE MILITARY IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN AND ELSEWHERE.

It will be VERY DIFFICULT; the Army controls communication better than it did during the Viet Nam era.

But nevertheless, IT MUST BE DONE.

If and when any "revolutionary" organising takes place in the United States --

then, WHICH SIDE DO YOU WANT THE SOLDIERS WITH LETHAL WEAPONRY IN THEIR HANDS, TO BE ON?????? THEIR side, or OUR side????????

The soldiers are EVEN NOW, BEING "TRAINED" TO SHOOT AT THEIR OWN FAMILY MEMBERS AND COMMUNITIES; just by calling some people such names as "eco-terrorists" and "helpers of al-Qaida".

SOLDIERS REFUSING TO FIGHT, not only Russians, but Germans, British, French and Canadian troops, helped bring World War I to a speedier end than would otherwise have happened. {Another FACT that history ignores -- I consider myself knowledgeable in History, but I NEVER HEARD THIS OR READ IT UNTIL I STARTED DOING RESEARCH ON THIS SPECIFIC SUBJECT.}

MUTINY caused even ALEXANDER THE GREAT'S TROOPS to give up Alexander's intended conquest of India!!!!! Even such a warlord as Alexander the "Great", COULDN'T GO AGAINST HIS TROOPS' REFUSAL TO FIGHT.

MUTINY AMONG THE AMERICAN, BRITISH, CANADIAN, AND OTHER FORCES IN THE MIDDLE EAST, WILL BE A KEY TO STOPPING THE WARLORDS AT HOME.

We need a Peace Movement, as so successfully in Viet Nam, that focusses ON THE TROOPS; and on UNDOING THE BRAINWASHING THEY ARE RECEIVING.

The empty, meaningless slogan "Support the Troops" has been a STROKE OF PROPAGANDA GENIUS in DE-FUSING the Peace Movement and rendering it AFRAID TO TAKE MEANINGFUL ACTION.

WE SHOULD SUPPORT, AND ONLY SUPPORT, THOSE TROOPS WHO SHOW THEIR MORAL COURAGE BY RESISTING FIGHTING THIS WAR. Those who LAY DOWN THEIR WEAPONS; those who apply for Conscientious Objector status {without much luck!}; those who DESERT, GO PERMANENTLY AWOL, FLEE TO CANADA OR OTHER PLACES.

THOSE troops, and ONLY those, and those who SUPPORT them, and support ONLY them, are the TRUE PATRIOTS.

Well, I'm off to my weekly VIGIL with "Women in Black"!

Actual Revolutions are made by THE YOUNG AND THE FIT.
They involve RISK-TAKING; like the young non-violent resisters at the Ports of Tacoma and Olympia, being BEATEN UP BY THE POLICE.
And with INCREDIBLE BRAVERY, returning to SIT-DOWN AGAIN AND ACTUALLY CLOSE THE PORTS. For a DAY, anyway.
Of course, OUR MEDIA MAKE SURE THAT THOSE OUTSIDE OF THE IMMEDIATE AREA, DON'T HEAR A WORD ABOUT THIS.
[And those IN the immediate area, get a TOTALLY DISTORTED VIEW from the press! But, THOSE WHO WERE THERE, KNOW! as do their friends!]
[I bet THE GUY WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE, HAS NOT HEARD OF THESE SIT-DOWN PORT-CLOSING PROTESTS!!!!!!]
[I bet YOU haven't, unless you live in the immediate area of the Pacific Northwest!!!!!!!!]

Yes, the majority Peace Movement has been very disappointing, when ALL they can suggest, is, still ANOTHER "March on Washington". Marches which grow SMALLER, not larger, each time. The slogan of the Lefties, is, they are "building" a movement. Yeah, when the marches get smaller & smaller: "building". Ha!

There hasn't been, ever, a "GEEZER REVOLUTION". If it were possible, we'd've HAD one by now!
Us "Geezers" are leftovers from the '60's consciousness.
We have to INVOLVE THE YOUNG PEOPLE; AND THOSE OF MILITARY AGE ESPECIALLY. Get them off of some of their social trivia!
"Women in Black" vigiling, are mostly grey-and-white-haired. Like me.

These are just my thots. There are other Vigils going on. They "keep the flame burning". They get wide support. NOBODY SHOULD CONFUSE THAT WITH REVOLUTION. It is maybe the BEST, us "Geezers" can do.

Maybe today's young EXPECT EVERYTHING TO BE EASY FOR THEM???????????
Those whom I HONOR, those young folks who BLED to CLOSE DOWN PORTS SHIPPING WAR MATERIEL TO IRAQ, who, I repeat, BLED for it, -- THEY are not expecting things to be "EASY"!

If we Elders SHOW THEM OUR SUPPORT -- and SPREAD THE NEWS WHEN THE MEDIA HAS A BLACKOUT -- we will have accomplished something!

They have proven effective in previous revolutions. What I have observed is a total lack of strategy among activists. This is a field of engagement. There must be strategy. There are also rules of engagement.

Know your enemy.

Know the battlefield.

Know your weaponry: what tools and tactics are at your disposal every day that you can apply intelligently towards acheiving your goals ?

Follow a unified strategy and unite the people.

Target the pillars of support and bring them down.

The beauty of this remarkable strategy is it is utterly nonviolent !

I suggest you read and copy the documents on this site as they are not likely to be available for long. Use them as your manual.

In Britain we have a government that is afraid of the people. France is another sister country where people power is ready to rise at the slightest infraction of their rights. The underground is alive and well.

In America, you are afraid of your government.

Why ?

Isn't it time to turn the tables ?

Maya, Britain, France, and many other countries have proportional representation, so it is likely that at least a few people within their government will side with the people.

Here in the U.S. we do NOT have proportional representation and NOBODY in government is likely to side with the people, although a few brave souls in Congress might mutter some platitudes.

In democracies, governments fear the people because the people have representation and power. In a fascist dictatorship like the U.S., there are no checks and balances, there is no rule of law, government officials are not accountable to the people, and we have no power. Our government has spent billions of dollars of our tax money on "Homeland Security" and has passed laws that will allow full implementation of police state policies in the event of civil unrest.

In cases where dictators were overthrown, there was support from foreign governments for the democracy movements. We have no support and few governments would stand up to the United States -- most rely on U.S. military bases and even those who don't would not openly support any opposition to the military-industrial corporate stranglehold on U.S. politics, although some will mutter platitudes.

We have no rights that our government is bound to respect. We have no representation in government. We do not have honest elections or honest politicians.

We also do not have an educated and informed citizenry. You're seeing some of the most intelligent activists on Care2, but even here we are constantly attacked by government infiltrators, military intelligence agency disinformation specialists (one stated mission of the U.S. Air Force is "Dominance in Cyberspace" and they budget and have staff for it, as do other agencies), political party operatives well versed in sophisticated psy-ops (psychological operations, among the classic tactics of which are smearing and isolating dissenters, a la Karl Rove), and right-wing hatemongers cleverly attempting to play on the sympathies of what they view as liberal dupes.

Because rape (and thus AIDS) and drug-resistant TB are common in U.S. prisons, nonviolent protesters will usually risk jail, where they can get bailed out or only serve a short sentence, but most will not risk prison. We have the most prisoners of any country in the world and our justice system is not worthy of the name.

In democratic countries, if the police are overly violent with peaceful protesters, as was the case at past political conventions, Miami GATT, Seattle GTO, attempts to block military shipments in Portland, the pro-Tibet protests in New York, and countless other examples where videos exist, the opposition parties within government would side with the people. WE HAVE NO OPPOSITION PARTY in government. Our three branches of government all represent the military-industrial complex, the multinational corporations, and the wealthy elite. We have no representation.

The pillars of support of the U.S. system are the groups I just named. Simply targeting the military-industrial complex with nonviolent actions is not going to bring it down. It is in the business of suppressing dissent by any means necessary.

Most Americans want to end the war crimes. Congress does not and will not. Most Americans want to impeach Bush and Cheney. Congress does not and will not. Either you limit your actions to where they don't have to hear you, or they WILL have you maced, tasered, and arrested.

Fifty percent of the Aerican electorate will not vote for preselected war criminals in faith-based elections. Almost twenty percent are fascists and support this regime. The other thirty percent are mostly people who say peace but vote war. People who say they love animals but support candidates who support dropping bombs on animals. People who would rather vote in rigged elections than not vote at all. Would you rather play in a rigged card game than not play at all?

That thirty percent wants to restore our democracy, because they are totally unaware that we never even had a republic, no less a democracy. Our Constitution doesn't even let us vote directly for President and Vice-President, and Congress itself is the sole judge of the elections, returns, and qualifications of its Members, not the voters. That thirty percent wants to restore our Constitution because they don't even know that our Constitution was written so as to preserve the power of the ruling elite and the wealthy, and not to allow power to the people. That thirty percent wants to restore the rule of law because they don't even know that the highest law of our land, the Supreme Court, is a patronage, not an elected position, and has NO minimum qualifications. How would Britain and France react if their heads of state were allowed to appoint a Council of Dictators from which there was no appeal as the highest law of the land?

It is that thirty percent, the ones who KNOW that the Democrats are NOT an opposition party, but think that they are somehow better than or less evil than the Republicans they will NOT oppose, who are the obstacle to change. They march in peace rallies and vote for war criminals. They call for 9/11 Truth but support political parties who stymied any real investigation and will continue to do so.

They are good people, and it isn't that they do nothing. They do a lot. But when they protest for peace, they nullify their own efforts by voting for war. When they call for impeachment, they nullify their own efforts by supporting candidates who will not sign on to impeachment resolutions. They are well-meaning and well-intentioned but they don't know what proportional representation is or what opposition parties are. They want change, but they think they can get it by supporting candidates of the status quo parties.

A United States we may be, but a united people? Watch closely how fiercely I get attacked on Care2 when I suggest that people might not really want to vote for war criminals in faith-based elections where they'll never know if their votes were counted anyway.

I really appreciate your post and the link, Maya. But I have to deal with the thirty percent who aren't even aware that Bush, Cheney, and the Democrats and Republicans in their lapdog Congress, have stripped Americans of rights like Habeus Corpus, which was something we had even under King George and which dates back to the Magna Carta of the 1600s. Not only has our Constitution been shredded, but the Magna Carta was shredded, and there are still thirty percent of the electorate who support the people who did it to us.

Twenty percent of us oppose democracy and always will. Fifty percent of us support democracy and will not support or participate in the sham of rigged elections with candidates who all support a war agenda. It is the thirty percent that SAY they support peace and democracy, but vote for war and despotism, who are dragging the rest of us down. It is their consent to and participation in our corrupt system that gives it the stamp of legitimacy and the illusion of still having some popular support.

I don't know the answers, Maya. But I know that I cannot further the cause of peace by voting for war or for war criminals. I know that I cannot further the cause of honest elections by voting in rigged elections. And I know that when I say so, I am attacked as if I had blasphemed against all that thirty percent considers holy.

Ask the British, the French, the Serbs, the Poles, or anyone else if they would vote in elections where the votes were counted secretly, where all the candidates had slight variations on the same war agenda, and where there was no proportional representation or opposition parties. Thirty percent of Americans will. And they dismiss the fifty percent of us who won't, as airily as Senator Olver dismissed the eighty percent of his constitutions who support impeachment.

Do you have any suggestions for how we can educate them about what a real democracy or democratic republic is, and what it is for the citizens to have a real voice in government? Because they will not work towards something that they already believe they have.

Mark I do understand. I see America falling and true voices are crying in a wilderness where the majority are still in denial. Denial is the easy way but it is deadly and those who persist in denial will not survive what is already upon you as they are unprepared.

The link I offerred was for countries that had already succuumed to dictatorship. This was the starting point for all action based on full scale Martial Law being in place.

It bears a close examination as it does contain crucial, empowering actions that all people can initiate, no matter how severe the oppression.

One crucial ingredient is to recognize the illigitamacy of the government in power. You set up a government for the people. This is in the American Declaration of Independence. You send ambassadors from the new government out to other nations and have it officially recognized as a legitimate government.

BMutinyThemIDefy's comments are part of this strategy. Everything fits together and you take on every pillar of support at once full scale.

I am sorry if this sounds simplistic. I am being cautious because I do know we are monitored online and evenn interacting with you, places me at risk...even though I am not an American citizen.

Many states, as I understand it, along with the Lakota people, have already considered separating. More will follow. The same strategies that robbed you of your freedom, can be used to help you reclaim them.

Turn the tables and you will turn the tide.

Thank you, Maya. I guess that thirty percent I spoke of are the ones in denial, who still recognize the legitimacy of this government, despite the fact that it has no legitimacy whatsoever.

But then I don't really know if there are thirty percent. That's a government figure and a government that commits war crimes and rigs elections will lie about statistics also.

What I do know for sure is that there are already more Americans who do NOT recognize the legitimacy of this election than who do. It is difficult to organize, though. It is not uncommon for infiltrators in U.S. activist groups to outnumber bona fide activists seven to one.

The Lakota Nation seems to be doing things right. I have yet to hear if any other country has granted them recognition. That could be a diplomatic (and literal) landmine. With as many democratically-elected governments as the U.S. has overthrown in pursuit of corporate profits, it would only be poetic justice if some of them, having survived the U.S.-backed pro-corporate dictators we installed, who killed so many of their own people and kept democracy at bay for so long, having now recovered and obtained governments that represent the people and not just the corporations, were the ones to help turn the tables and turn the tide here.

Thankyou Mark noted . B Mutiny may be right- over here we actually got into media studios while they were broadcasting and we broadcast our own stuff from a radio van during the Vietnam fracus
Wea lso used the strategy of changing billboards in an anti smoking campaign- the idea being that a well known slogan would carry it's sabotage ed new message like a virus every time the old message was seen that's just a couple of strategies- wealso ordered things to be delivered to people targeted dumped on their front lawns etc and we blocked communication by overusing the telephones and postal serviceanyway that is just a few tried creative ideas to be going along with

Marc, whatever the figures are that the media vomits up, there are only approximately 600 people sitting in the halls of power in your country.

How many millions of American citizens are there ?

Numbers are everything and with the right strategy, victory may be a long process, fraught with bloodshed and horror...but it is assured...eventually.

What other option is there really ?

Gandhi's love may have had a little help from other people's anger, Dave. Have you ever read Ward Churchill's essay, "Pacifism as Pathology"?

LONGSHORE WORKERS' STRIKE ON MAY FIRST, WEST COAST OF U.S.

ON MAY FIRST, THERE IS BEING PLANNED A ONE-DAY LONGSHORE WORKERS' STRIKE ALL ALONG THE WEST COAST, FROM PORTS IN WASHINGTON STATE AND OREGON DOWN TO CALIFORNIA.

LET US SHOW OUR SUPPORT OF THIS STRIKE -- WHICH IS TO PROTEST THE WAR -- WHETHER WE ARE LONGSHORE WORKERS, OR UNION WORKERS, OR NOT!

No doubt, the Kept Media will LIE about it -- either by reporting it FALSELY, or by not reporting anything at all!!!

WE CAN ALL DO SOMETHING.

We can at the very least, keep posted on the Internet, and inform others as things develop.

Even a ONE-DAY STRIKE, will help to RAISE CONSCIOUSNESS about the war; as WELL as, about THE POWER THAT LABOR POTENTIALLY HAS, IF THEY WILL USE IT!!!
