HERO Police Dog Nero Is on Death Row Because the Force Will Not Pay for a Life-Saving Operation

The seven-year-old sable German shepherd has spent a career catching criminals, finding missing people, and even providing blood transfusions for fellow hounds. But now he will be put to sleep rather than be put forward for the routine procedure

How noble 2 treat a fellow officer like this, i dont see any police dog being paid for work they have done for numerous years on the force. This police force doesnt deserve 2 have dogs as police officers, these dogs deserve better,..Nero deserves better. I would donate & i think plenty of others would 2, we respect animals & respect the work Nero has done..I hope Nero craps & pees, all over their tires on their police cars!

noted & signed with hope - Thank you Scooby!

I dread to think how many times the police have benefited from this dog and certainly he is much more loyal than many policeman. And now, surgery is too expensive - how ungrateful this policemen really can be??? They also could collect the needed money to save the dog's life instead of simply give him no chance. But these people seem to be very stupid and unimaginative!!!

Noted and signed - I am beyond words now - WTF is wrong with these rubbishes - would they not have rallied together to raise funds to save this beautiful dog who has so faithfully assisted them. Jesus, this is beyond unforgivable, I am absolutely horrified that they could even think to do this.

Unbelievable! A "member of the force" is ill and you will not pay for his surgery! But you will pay to put him down! Will that be for a syringe or a cheaper bullet? Shame on you! Thanks Kev and Scooby!

The police should have plenty of money to pay for this just from the confiscated drugs, booze and stolen property they're selling under the table.

I suppose the people who put this in the rule book would actually prefer to put injured police to sleep as well? But don't quite dare go that far ...

Great news everybody!

Nero the hero: Police dog who faced being put down over £2900 vet bill looks set to enjoy happy retirement after undergoing surgery.

HERO police dog Nero has had the operation that should set him up for a happy retirement.

The German shepherd was facing death by lethal injection until the Record stepped in to reveal
shameful penny-pinching by Police Scotland.

We told how bosses would rather put the seven-year-old dog down than pay a £2900 vet bill for the op on his two slipped discs.

The force did a rapid U-turn after our story sparked outrage, and Nero’s surgery on Monday went well .

Thanks so much to everyone who signed and shared to help him.

Police Scotland has a facebook page. Here's the latest on Nero, and the link for their page:
"Police Scotland [13 hrs] ·
As promised, here is an update on Police Dog, Nero.
Nero had his surgery on Monday and he is recovering in the Small Animal Hospital. The operation wasn't as straight forward as was hoped and he will be staying at the hospital for the next few days for observations but is already showing some interest in food and has been able to walk with a bit of assistance. Officers are maintaining daily contact with the amazing vets and staff at the hospital to check on Nero’s condition.
Thank you all once again for all your kind messages of support."
